yes I know Illinois runs 3 miles, not a 5k, and if you read the thread, you would see that I even added 30 seconds to each runner, and STILL 205 run under 18 minutes. If 40 seconds are added 205 run under 18 minutes. If 0ne (1) minute is added then only 200 or so run under 18 minutes. Logic not broken. If high school athletes can do this, so can a 24 year old professional athlete. It simply is not as hard as some of you think it is. Why or why do I even try?
A personal anecdote: This race was while I was in high school in 1986 or 1987. The Atlanta Track Club had races around Stone Mountain, which is a moderately hilly five mile loop. Nearing the end of his baseball career, Tom Paciorek was there with his family. If I recall, he ran in the 35:xx range. Given that this was likely not a race situation, that he was 6'4", 215 lbs (thank you, baseball reference), nearly forty years old, and not known for his speed, I figure it is a lock that one MLB player can break 18.

What is it 3 miles or 5k? big difference buddy! if that many marines ran under 18 min then the course was way short. if you had that many people running three miles under 18 min the the marine coprs running team would beat out the army, navy and Air force every year but that is yet to happen. Perhaps it would be better to ask the question: how many elite runners can hit a homerun pitched from a middle school baseball team.
How many elite runners could even hit a MLB pitch? Probably close to zero.
That said, these threads are dumb. There are definitely at least a couple MLBers that could run an 18 min 5k. At least a few of them care about their fitness - and let's be honest, 18 min isn't that fast for a professionally trained athlete.

Steve Avery who had an incredible early career before injuires captained his XC team to the state meet his senior year and ran in the mid 17's.
A starting pitcher would have the best chance. In college, we had to run each and every day -- most of the time moderate distance, though at time doing 100m strides. Long runs are covered as well as a long standing baseball tradition is to run "foul poles" for 45-60 minutes the day after your start to get rid of all of the dead stuff in your arms and legs. I never played pro ball but took up running after college and have gone 18:20 at 6-7, 190 lbs. I figure if I could do that, then today's MLB player with access to better equipment, coaching and philsophies could attain the same. I'd be wary of claiming a position player could do it -- they do hardly any running outside of sprints. Unless the have a prep background or extensive offseason routine, it would be hard to crack 18. I'd say with confidence that more pitchers can attain it than hitters without question.
I doubt any one of these guys could but they could whup you in a 90' dash. The shortstop at my high school was a descent cross country runner but I think he could go sub 18.

billy1500: take a spelling class once in awhile there lad, your inability to write coherent and correctly might inhibit your career. Also, it might come in handy when trying to make common sense. In my 12 years on active duty, I never once ran the three mile run over 18 minutes, and I never once was first, or second or third in my company, squadron, or battalion. Quite often I was in the top ten but then again, big whoopty-doo. The Co of OCS when I went there, Colonel, (later BGen) Robert Johnson was known for finishing the whole PFT in under 18 minutes. He later became somewhat famous duty Operation Desert Storm.
runrayb: I should hope that the lads could "whup" me, they are probably 20-25 years younger than me.
Can even one MLB player run a 17:00 5k would be questionable. Can even one run a 16:30, I would say most likely no way. But 18:00-give me three months and I could probably run an 18:00 5k. This week, thousands of young high school boys will run 18:00 5k's. Surely one MLB can.

I can't believe there are so many people who doubt there are several baseball players who could break 18:00. 18 flat is so slow!! I took a year off running, trained a few miles a day for a month and broke 18. These guys are freaking professional athletes and several of them ran middle distance in track or even cross back in high school. There are probably 25 guys or more that could do it, counting all the bench players and pitchers.
The people nay saying the baseball players conditioning need to get over themselves and realize what a weak accomplishment running an 18 min 5k is to begin with.
