Centro vs Fernandez over 1500m?

Fernandez hasn't done much in months.

Centro is on target to run 3:34 this year.

7th on the list with Rupp not giving the 5K a go yet and pushing him back to 8th isn't quite the level people had expected from German. On the conservative side I think people thought he'd debut in the 13:25 range at a race like stanford.

3:55 indoors at any level comes up much more impressive than 13:31 for a 1500/5K guy. People thought he could have broken Rupps mark last summer and he seemed to have made a substantial jump between then and his 3:55. His 3:40 conversion from his conference race was also not quite what people thought he was going to be running at this point. And he pushed that hard from start to finish, just like his indoor 3:55.

Maybe he's on a conservative plan to peak for this summer, which would be a nice change from past planning.

3:42 in Lubbock converts to a 3:38.x 1500 at sea-level.

Think not as the NCAA have put it down as 3 40.04 so not really 3 38.xx!

Kiprop just won an Olympic medal (whether we call it gold or silver is up to you guys but either way, pretty good. So that question could go both ways.

Imagine if 'Pretty Boy*' Fernandez was fugly? (*his official nickname, Centro's is "HotShot" - his father ought to know, he gave him both the nickname and the "shot" that resulted in his birth...)

If GF was butt ugly, imagine the threads on this board. And he'd have had the cajones to go to Oregon, instead of joining the Oregon loser Smith.

Herman has a lot to prove. He's run what? One and a half races since last summer with top competition where he had a chance to win... Jordan doesn't count, no chance to win.

Fernandez so far is a Freshman pussy only running time trial gimmies and losing every other race where there was real competition. I don't care about his time, the legion of hispanic runners who physically matured early and then crashed are legion, and he has done nothing yet to show he is an All American athletic stud.

Herman has a lot to answer for, and a lot on the line in the next few weeks.

I don't think he can take the pressure cooker.

Centro has shown on at least two occassion he can take Place Numero Uno, surrounded by top runners, and off of different paces.

He's a lot like his dad. Victories over everything else.

Herman has picked races he was guarenteed to lose, and have excuses for.

Centro Jr. has kept his mouth shut, and is slowly building a winning adult career for himself -- while having fun.

I wonder if Herman is having fun?

Again, seriously, you really don't know running from a hole in the ground. For German to be right there on the 5K list after missing several WEEKS of training over a 2-3 month period, is GREAT. If any of those other guys missed even a week of training leading up to their respective race, I guarantee they wouldn't be within 10 seconds of their time.

Do you know how legendary it is for runners to run their PR's or just close to their PR's after injury lay offs???

--Especially those that are being over trained.

The point is, Pretty Boy may have made that list, but he couldn't win that race, and if he is the Prodigy boy some tout him to be here, then he has got to win races.

Which me may do.

His pattern of injuries, rest, good times, injuries, rest, good times. Says something. It may be saying that he thrives off the rest periods.

Rupp ran more races week in and week out and won more as a freshman.

Maybe German has his coming out party in the next few weeks and we'll all see, but to date, his Freshman year has been weird one.

He's not being held to the standard of Webb or Rupp on these boards. (Of course everyone not commenting on these boards just laughs, cos it is all comedy and time wasting right?)

Why would he be held to a lower standard?

Rupp won a lot more as a frosh? That doesn't seem right to me, buddy.

easy stud. great runners miss several weeks of training all the time. he cross trained like all the rest of them. sometimes guys come out ripping after a short cross training period because they are so focussed and motivated. if you don't know this from experience than you might need to learn a little more. it is certainly not ideal, nobody wants it to happen, but the result is some people come back swinging harder than ever. and actually fernandez history has proven that he's been one of the leading examples of this scenario.

all that aside, 13:31 after a few weeks of cross training and a huge freshman base in comparison to his high school training, and for a guy of his caliber is fine. it is not great. great is opening up indoors in 3:56 a month after his achilles nearly ruptured (allegedly). great is not long after running 3:55 solo indoors. great is starting as a freshman in cross country and beating some of the top returners in the NCAA. 13:31 for german, is respectable. 13:24 and winning would have been great.

you can't measure a guy with that talent level against your standards or the standards of even very good ncaa runners. because he is much better than that. did you forget that he's the fastest 2 miler in high school history? he did it largely running alone. this is a guy who runs 14:24 for a 5K course with substantial hills, turns and uneven footing in high school. 13:31 is not much better than the fitness he was in last summer when he was doubling 4:00/8:40 alone.

you may not like to hear it, because your obviously a big fan but it is what it is. again it's very respectable, but i doubt most familiar with the sport would call it great, relative to who we're talking about here.
