Gee, I feel bad about this, given Mr. Chadwicks advice, but there's not an AD in the country from Middle School thru College who doesn't make budget cuts themselves. The Board of Directors, president, superintendent what ever, might tell them they need to cut X amount of dollars from the budget, but I seriously doubt the president of Quinnipiac told the AD he had to drop Outdoor Track.

Hopefully they can at least swap the deal and cut indoor instead of outdoor. It would be a shame to see the young freshman they have and the solid recruiting class which is supposed to be coming in head somewhere else. On that note, Dan Roark set the freshman record today with an 8:29 (3k) at IC4As.

As for the AD bashing, I have heard from reliable sources that it was in no way his decision and that he was almost fired for fighting to save the program.

Having just talked to a QU coach last night, the decision came down to needing to cut the volleyball team and then cutting another men's program to go with it. It was all because of Title IX. There weren't many other programs they could have cut if they wanted to keep the ration in balance. The coaches are trying to change the decision to lose indoor instead of outdoor. While it stinks if any school cuts an athletic program, I don't really see the big deal here. The coaches were all told when they were hired it was going to be a distance program, not a track program. They usually run well during xc, and no one takes December/ January seriously. They can still do the local meets in Boston and run unattached duing the winter. They then can gear up for outoors which then leads back to their summer base mileage. This won't hurt the program one bit.

CT Coach, you are right that the program will be fine if they can switch the cut from Outdoor track to Indoor track. However, right now it is still outdoor track that got the ax and that puts the whole distance program in jeopardy. Hopefully, they can make the switch happen for next year.

Also, in response to ray - while I am sure the AD has the final say in most cases, I think there is more than meets the eye with the QU Athletic Dept. I believe QU is one of the only schools in the country to have a "VP of Athletics", who is above the AD. I could be way off on this, but I thought that I heard something along those lines. So, it is possible that Jack did not have the final say. It isn't clear at this time.

However, if Jack was given the decision between cutting Indoor and Outdoor, which is likely - I have no idea what the hell he was thinking in cutting outdoor. Cutting Indoor sucks, but the team can run unattached at a few great meets (Yale, BU or Armory) and really gear up for Outdoor. Not a big deal... maybe even beneficial to put all training toward outdoor. But, if outdoor track is cut, the whole program could be in trouble, because not many recruits will come to a school that doesn't sponsor outdoor.

Best of luck to the QU guys this outdoor. Show them what a mistake they are making.

I understand the coaches emphasize outdoor over indoor, but I wonder why. Are there not more indoor opportunities in the northeast where the spring collegiate season is usually short with often miserable weather? Why not keep indoor?

That's a sort of regional abnormality. Nation and world wide track is an outdoor sport. If you're a serious cross country runner there's a very good chance your best track event is going to be the 5,000, 10,000 or steeple. If you only have an indoor program you'll have no chance to run the last two events and limited chances at the first.

And your best chances to run as fast as possible will come outdoors. Look at indoor mile lists and compare them to indoor mile lists. Yes, that can be skewed in the northeast but a college program will give its athletes the chance to travel to events where they'll have their best chance of performing their best.

Maybe that goes back to the comment about too many layers of administration....

It's obvious this was about money, but not the expense of men's track.

They wanted to whack v-ball for the $$. They needed to cut some men's roster spots for T-IX,since indoor and outdoor track are the same kids but considered seperate opportunities to participate, they get the ax-- sort of what went down at Ohio U last year.

If this was about how expensive the track program was, they would have cut indoor as well or gotten rid of the entire men-- alla St John's or JMU

They have something that resembles an indoor track (it's awful, but it looks like a track anyway) so maybe that had something to do with keeping indoor vs. outdoor as well.

Whatever, the deed is done, but if the AD doesn't get to make the call, what's the point of his position? And why would you throw your superior under the bus? This is not passing the smell test or the QU kids are trying to make themselves feel better by believing what they want to believe.

Maybe they can save track with the left-over meal money that men's hoops won't use when their season ends after the spanking they take from Bobby Mo.

Ray...you are a numb nuts. And what you numb nuts don't get is that men's T&F OPPORTUNITY is dropping which means men's T&F PARTICIPATION is DROPPING. Once men's T&F PARTICIPATION drops to a low enough level the "big programs" (in your eyes) will have the hammer dropped as well.

Hay Ray, I forgot to mention: In a few years when your son wants to run in college and can't you remember to look him in the eye and explain how he doesn't deserve the OPPORTUNITY.

I guess you're just too plain lazy to read the entire thread. Given the obvious intelligence level that's understood. I'm not going to explain my comments for the 3rd or 4th time. By the way, how about manning up for your remarks???

Again, as a side, I have in no way indicated that the kids on that team nor the coaches on that team don't take the sport seriously. I indicated from personal knowledge and from the actions of the AD and other administrators simply said THEY do not, nor have they ever taken it seriously.

You cannot cut a women's sport and be in compliance with Title IX. Read Cohen v. Brown. To say that these moves are because of Title IX is ridiculous. Also courts have found that cheerleading cannot count as a varsity sport for the sake of Title IX. Quinnipiac needs to consult some lawyers, and/or get ready for a bunch of lawsuits, that will be more expensive than continuing to sponsor these sports.
