Feel free to email me to discuss any moderation issues. We've made some good progress from email in this thread.mailto:wejo@letsrun.com
This thread went off the rails a bit with 1 particular poster hijacking it and trying to make it about one moderator so we have locked it.
Before I give my takeaways, if you have concerns about moderating, or posts, please report them or email me directly. We make it very easy to be heard at LetsRun.com and reach us. But if you sidetrack threads by discussing moderation, those posts will be removed and can lead to temporary bans as they ruin the discussion for everyone else.
But some takeaways. 1) Dealing with the problematic posters/troublemakers isn't easy but we need to make sure in dealing with them we do not go too far and harm the experience for other posters 2) The filters often flag people by accident. Exempt SC members from the filters at the very least. 3) Consider creating a toggle so people don't have to see "this post was deleted in a thread". In the posts where the trouble makers try and takeover, these notifications start to ruin the experience. 4) Consider moving some posts out of the main forum. 5) Look at limiting how often people can post in a thread. 6) Try and get a better handle on the use of VPNs by people posting, reporting posts, upvoting, etc. 7) I will actively monitor all of malmo's moderating and posts for the next week and give him feedback. We already actively communicate but some of your points and emails were helpful.
You say this as if making posters stop and think before posting is a bad thing.
I like funny irreverent humor and opinions that may be unpopular. I like a spot of trolling from time to time. Some of the funniest things I have ever read in my life were on LRC before The Great Terror of ‘23. That’s a lot more likely if people can sign in under different handles. People just become really cautious and vanilla and humorless when they only post under their own name.
I don't know what you're posting under anonymous user names of course, but it's also the case that most of the garbage posts comes from anonymous user names.
It's at least worth considering the tradeoff.
If it's supposed to be "like a conversation with your running buddies", I know my running buddies by name.
Also registration ought to make moderation a whole lot easier.
Also. Why is any thread critical of Trump allowed to stay up but threads praising him for new developments are immediately deleted?
we try and consolidate threads on political figures. But i've had people email me and complain we are defending Trump so i think threads from both sides are getting deleted.
Malmo has banned me twice. On one of the threads you interjected, saying, "Malmo is wrong on this one." I can't remember which thread, maybe world xc?
I replied, "Malmo, what's wrong?" and got banned.
I get that personal attacks should be off limits, but moderators probably should have thicker skin....AND most importantly, Malmo is typically in violation of the "no personal attacks" policy. How can you let that stand?
Look at the IPS of the posts (and the content) he deleted on this thread and ask yourself if this is someone who should be moderating.
As for not posting under a username, I would, but I keep forgetting the password.
Feel free to email me about your specific issue. Sometimes people will say "malmo banned me" and I'll look and it wasn't even malmo.
Moderating is extremely difficult.
I have restored all posts in this thread and told Malmo not to touch them. I have asked him about one moderation decision in the last day

This too will never change. The BroJos like to pretend like they’re Walter Cronkite or something, and that making the forum to everyone means that they’re more likely to break big news and get the real scoop on something.
It’s ridiculous on its face but again, it’s not really about that — it’s about protecting the fact that they know as well as anyone that they can’t actually moderate anything thing to any real degree. It’s all just lip service. Do you think they’re perfectly fine with whatever mentally ill person is doing with the Dahl shtick in a hundred threads a day, every day, without end? Of course not, but they can’t stop it.

I would say the worst abuser of our site uses registered usernames to do their havoc.
But we believe in anonymity and don't know of a way to allow it without allowing unregistered names. If you have to be logged in to post anonymously I think that means we can track you which isn't our intention.
So it seems Wejo is not going to limit Malmo's moderation even though a lot of posters think he oversteps his bounds.
He is probably also not going to ban posters for being annoying ala the guys talking about ped use, the guys talking politics, the guy talking about the old times, etc.
He probably can't stop Barrett Dahl from posting about his fake life and spamming when those posts get deleted - basically anyone with enough time and a vpn can post whatever whenever for at least a few minutes.
With these conceits: What can letsrun do differently that will improve the site?
-Stop the copy and paste from reddit. These guys don't care about discussion, they just hope to get views and google ranking then come back and drop spam. Some have discussed they think its a bot.
-Some of the politics could be contained to master threads or annual threads on those given topics - eg tarrifs, how much they love Trump, etc.
-I think the brojos should take a more active role in moderation or at least read the board some days. From what they post it seems like they don't even read the board anymore.
-get rid of the you can only post under one handle thing. This just allows domination of threads by those with no life who use vpns to sock ala Dahl
//good job stopping the troll rich from ca, or at least making him bored enough that he went away
I’m not going to launch a personal attack, but just say something factual: The430miler is not a coach and lies about his credentials, times, and various other elements of his life on a daily basis on this website. It’s pretty annoying and unless you’re an old head and you know the drill with this guy, you might be tempted to take his word for something he says on a thread. I’m not going to tell you what to do, but to just continue to let him rant endlessly whilst Malmo goes behind his posts and removes “Coach” from his signature is not a solution. He makes the experience on this website more frustrating than it has to be.
I know you dont want to hurt the feelings of your seasoned moderator here but he is responsible for the overwhelming majority of posters who are lashing out.
That individual feels that hes helping or changing the world by moderating the board. At this point his behavior seems to be just a compensational act to make up for what he was just short of accomplished in running. Either way, it's a really sad and unhealthy way for him to spend his time. Especially at that age, most normal or mentally healthy folks would rather be spending their golden years of life with family, seeing the great outdoors, or cherishing something that actually matters. Power, gaslighting, and self promotion are all that's ever mattered to your 1 SEASONED moderator.
With all due respect, in order for your forum to contine to have regular daily visitors, I think it speak for all of us when I say that specific moderator should simply be relieved and exchanged with someone who isnt doing this job out of vengeance, but only to follow forum protocol and remove posts that break the community standards.

I liked Rich i!n CA. Far better than Dahl
if seeing his posts again meant I didn't have to see Dahl's lies, I'd look forward to his posts every day

this is why it's called LEADERSHIP and not management

Thanks for responding.
If anonymity is the primary goal you're probably right.
I'm not clear why that should be the primary goal versus, say, meaningful conversation between people with a common interest without being overrun by vandals.
From a user perspective, if a registered user is generating a lot of garbage, we have the ability to block their posts, but maybe you're talking about something more than that.

Your post is reasonable, but Rich in Californi-yay was the least of this board‘s problems. His threads were deleted relatively quickly. Though I found them to be funny and harmless, I would have deleted them too. But I would hardly hold him up as an example of a true problem poster.
(I have to spell his name in a weird way or it won’t let me post.)
Also. Why is any thread critical of Trump allowed to stay up but threads praising him for new developments are immediately deleted?

Political comments by unregistered users drag this place down. Your 250,000 post Trump thread is your baby, wejo and rojo, and you wonder why this site has lost its focus and charm. Get rid of your baby.
Ban newname. His obsession with Israel / Jews takes over every thread he posts in.
Also permanently ban Dahl and all his sock puppets for spam.
Lastly, can you limit Deno to one music and old football thread? Do we really need a new thread about “random conference running backs from the 1950s” seemingly every day?
Bumping this one for wejo to acknowledge. These are 3 of the biggest "true troublemakers" on the board

I'm not pretending to be Walter Cronkite but I personally believe people should be able to post about running without revealing who they are.

That is why a lot of Dahl's posts are being deleted.
As for Rich in CA, you think he was harmless but he is still trying to post that stuff nearly every day.
