College's that actually develop runners

Bellingham might be one of the best non altitude places in the US to train too. Just endless trails and dirt roads.

I would say it depends on the environment from what I hear Chapman doesn’t want the guys running those times on 50+ miles a week already. If they are doing that on no formal training plan he knows he can make them absolute monsters

He doesn't want guys who ran 4:20 in high school? Does he have ESP? How would he know which guys are running 50 MPW or 40 MPW or 60 MPW without reaching out to them? Guys like Nico Young and Graham Bkanks were doing some mileage in high school but they made gigantic improvements in college.

He talks to them. A conversation doesn’t mean he’s automatically recruiting them… he also would much rather have a kid running those times on 30 miles a week then 70 and so would almost any other coach.

He has never reached out to any of our guys or any other guys that I am aware of. You can claim that but it isn't true. He takes anybody who wants to go there but he doesn't recruit anyone.

Was he formerly a HS coach? I know these things ebb and flow because the Park women are not good at all in XC right now.

Yes, but as not the HS head coach. Was a HS assistant who ran the training program. More the brains behind athlete's development.

By the looks of XC Season, Weber State University in Utah does a solid job, with a lot of local talent. They’re probably middle of the Big Sky for funding, just beat out a much better funded Montana St for 2nd on Men’s and Women’s.

A lot of these d2 schools that are being mentioned are only good because they can throw 30 guys at 80 now and run with the 7 that don't get hurt. I've heard better about the colorado schools, but Western Washington and Chico are terrible for this. Throw Gonzaga in that too.

Dehaven often talks about his recruiting efforts by snapping a 350 mile circle around Brookings, SD and go after these kids. 10 Summit League Championships in a row. A lot of the midwest kids don't hit 50 miles per week in training and are primed for massive gains with a program like Dehaven's. It helps having the facilities like the SJAC. Other programs in the Summit League are gaining traction but largely because of foreign runners and transfer portal pick-ups. UND comes to mind.

What would prevent the 70 mpw guy from lying and claiming he only ran 30 mpw?

1. Integrity would. Most higher level runners in High School are honest, intrinsically motivated and hardworking kids.

2. High school coaches provide training plans for recruits to colleges if asked almost every time.

Yeah unfortunately GT is a tool and woke as they come. Dang shame

They were really good in 2019. Got absolutely screwed out of making NCAA’s. SUU had their top guy at the mountain regional DNF midway through while with the top pack, they would have pushed them into with Kolas points.

They ended up getting two individual Q’s with Christian Allen (14th) and Taylor Dillon (~60th) at NCAA’s…their #1-5 were interchangeable the whole season.

Much respect for that program.
