Who is she mother? Who is she father? Is her parents good runners?
Her father is John Hedengren, a former top runner for BYU. I'm not sure if her mom was a runner.
Her is faster than she father:
2000-T&F: Took 3rd in the 3,000m (8:49.28) and 3rd in the 5,000m (15:32.56) at the MWC Indoor Championships ...finished 3rd in the 10,000m with a 32:03.06 at the MWC Outdoor Championships ... selected to the GTE Academic All-America 2nd team for maintaining a 3.95 GPA in chemical engineering.
How much faster will she eventually go? For a HS boy you'd assume they could take 30 seconds off their HS 5000m best. I see no reason to expect this to be her lifetime best, but just how much quicker will she get in the next decade. American record? Sub 14?
She should decommit from BYU and just go pro with Taylor Made Elite. Unless she’s enthused by the prospect of taking a year off to go try and convert some Liberians or something
Jane Hedengren has been wanting to run for BYU since she was a little kid. No way she doesn't run at least one year in college.
Correct me if I'm off base here, but I don't think it's as common for females to serve missions as young adults.
Don't train or shop Sundays, but go to church instead... don't drink or have alcohol or even coffee, or have premarital sex but donate 10% of your income on personal principle.
But sure ...go ahead and drug your body and cheat to win.
I'm not saying Mormons can't be cheaters and or that that must be good people. But certainly the probability of an athlete who won't touch alcohol or coffee that strategically takes peds in their young age is lower than average.
That said, I can envision possibilities where an obsessed father conditions the kid from an early age that "this is how you do things"...
If you can imagine that you need to equally accept there might be a benefit to the ideal combination of genetics in some people that when combined with training, lifestyle, food and drug choices, rest days, etc. that come with the Mormon life. Then factor in altitude.

Most male to female points tables / equivalencies have this as a 13:07ish 5k. The top high school boys in the US are still 13:30s guys. Crazy to think of a US boy running sub 13:10 in HS
The updated World Athletics scoring table equates her time to a 13:11 for males. But if we look at proximity to the world record, Daniel Simmons' 13:25 high school record is slightly ahead. Compared to the men's world record, Simmons' HS record is 50.5 seconds slower, which is 6.3%. Compared to the women's world record, Hedengren's HS record is 57.72 slower, which is 6.4%. Those percentages are close enough that I think we can say they are on the same level.

Jane Hedengren going sub 14 seems very unlikely. But she should have a good shot at breaking the American 5k record.
I had a ton of August and September kids in my high school graduation class. They all turned 18 at the very beginning of the academic year. Even had a July 1st kid on my XC team that turned 19 6 weeks after graduation.
I never knew a single person that did the opposite. Nobody turned 17 their senior year.
I figured that's the way it worked all across the US, but maybe it's dependent on state/region of country.
Here in AZ the cutoff is August 31st. There are occasional exemptions made, but not common. Basically anyone born in September will be the oldest in their class.
I graduated high school at 17 and turned 18 mid Nov freshman year if college.
That didn't take long. I guess he woke up, got on LRC, read about the record, and just had to make drug accusations. Can you people please ban this guy indefinitely for everyone else's sake?
Jane is the cleanest athlete there is. You were a fan of Tuohy for years even though it became clear that she was playing with fire which is why she is now a slow poke. She can't beat a high school girl. How embarassing for a once great prodigy.
A U.S woman who could run 14:57 and hit the World Rankings Quota would have very likely been in Paris last year............
She may have a solid shot at being in Tokyo. Especially if she gets into a race where she doesn't have to lead at all and can run 14:50.
St. Pierre won't be at USA's this year (giving birth on May 8).
If Valby focuses on the 10, it comes down to Cranny, Schweizer, Morgan, and Hendegren (and maybe Shelby?) for the remaining 3 spots.
And there's no guarantee that both Cranny and Schweizer will opt to run the 5 in Tokyo.
Why in God's name would she want to go to Tokyo to get destroyed at Worlds and extend her track season into September?
That sounds like a TERRIBLE idea for me. Shut her down, get her ready for NCAA xc in college.
Thankfully, I think there is little chance she makes the team if she does try out. There are slew of US women - some of whom aren't even 5000 runners who can run 14:57.
Indoors we had Josette Andrews (14:44), Emily Mackay (14:45) and Whittni Morgan (14:48). Schweizer, Cranny and Houlihan can do it in their sleep.
This is why US underperforms on the world stage. NCAA xc is worthless. Getting experience at the world stage is everything. Look at Ingebrigtsen.
This 5k on the track is faster than some male hs 5k state records. I know the fastest 5k by a hs boy from Maine is only like 14:55 on a track. This is a blockbuster performance.
