You are correct. Why is this so confusing for so many posters? It makes me see why so many people are in debt and have no idea how to get out. In terms of track and field at a national level, both are really high school age because Sadie could move to a different state today that has a cutoff of August 1st.
Because in most countries the school grades are based on calendar years, not school years.
It is pretty clear that her recent efforts exceed anything that any prep athlete, male or female, have accomplished over the last several years. There is a much larger gap between her times across multiple distances and the rest of the elite pack versus any gaps on the male side. Much like Mikaela Shiffrin is the best skier in the world (of both genders), she is surely the best prep runner of recent times.
Her mile and 5k are just a hair better than her peers. Prep running is really deep right now. 3:34 or 13:25 is getting my vote for best performance of the past half decade but these are right there. A couple NT outdoors and I could easy be convinced that she is the best.

I am not sure if the line up did her favors but she looked like giant. Probably cause the girl in front was like 5’1🤣. Well, she is running the 5k against college runners/pros in mid April at Bryan Clay.
I don't think she'll run at the USA Championships this year because they are being held July 31 – August 3 and Jane will probably be doing cross country training by then.

What a dumb post. The US isn't some 3rd world country where sometimes someone's date of birth is a mystery.
My point is that the ages of the two runners is boring to discuss. If we all decided they are too old to run in HS, what happens next? Maybe we could start another BYU thread.

It isn’t about her running those times as much as those are the type of races where there will be a stream of runners between 4:00-4:06 and 14:55-15:10 where she could be on a good day.

What we here on Letsrun "decide" is totally irrelevant to what the state rules are as to what ages they allow to compete in high school sports in their state. If the state allows them to run, then they can run. Simple as that.
Rylee ran 3:31 on the 1200m leg of the DMR the day after the 5k and passed the baton in first helping the team win the National title and #1 Time US 11:37. So she actually had 2 big races in her legs for the MILE. She is ready to run 4:32-4:35 if fresh.
15:16 / 3:31 / 4:42 is a very good weekend of work and shows great strength.

Since y'all brought up her age, she turned 18 in September 2024. How much of an advantage that is...you can decide. Age advantages take a whole new meaning in College so her being 19 for XC for BYU won't make much of a difference when she's competing against mid-20 somethings.
I think it's more her height than her age that is the difference maker (other than her systematic training since elementary school). Most gals are much shorter than her (she's 6'0"). She would still tower over someone like Emma Coburn---who usually towers over her African competitors. I would bet BYU will experiment with her in the steeple. That height advantage can't be ignored.
List a few countries' start dates. Be prepared to be surprised. Some countries use calendar year but they don't start at age 4.
It just doesn't matter, because there is no interest in results of any secondary school competition.
What is equivalent to a hs national champion is winning the U20 national meet with your club. That is calendar year based with the year you turn 19 being your last.
Now the finalists could range from grade 10 for an immigrant learning the language to second year of college for a junior, or cooking school, or auto mechanic school. Only age counts for U20, not what level you are, or where you attend school.

Impressive, for sure. The mile was her 3rd race of the weekend and she still PR'd? Scary to see what she can do from here. Can she double at State? ...or triple with the 4x800?

Exactly. The state rules are the state rules so why are we even discussing them? My initial post was in response to a poster typing “I love the talk of age.”
