Trump isn't very good at selling at lot of his ideas to the public. But the public should be able to see that acquiring Greenland would be great for America, in addition to being vital for national security. Some of you guys just seem incredibly confused and ignorant on this issue. You seriously don't see any value in Greenland?
How is it vital for national security?
Donkey, you were going to go read up about Greenland and its importance to the US. Go do that and I think you'll find the common sense answer to why acquiring Greenland is vital to national security and other things.
re why not ask, you have That Neighbor who always reminds you how rich he thinks he is. you are collegial for the sake of friendliness. then That Neighbor gets it in his head his extended family should move to the neighborhood and starts pestering you to buy your house. you tell him no. he keeps asking.
what do you think that does to relations?
also, while perhaps strategic in a positional sense, all we need is a couple bases, not a full blown presence, and a good relationship where that's to the exclusion of enemies. we don't need the whole thing, and making them angry actually threatens the bases, the friendliness, and the exclusion of our enemies.
i am sure there are private mining, oil, uranium, resort, etc. companies who wouldn't mind getting a cheap leased foothold if we bought the thing, but they can negotiate a lease with the existing government and landowners, and it's not our job to save them a buck by intermediating those deals by spending billions? trillions? to buy a bunch of frozen tundra.
also, as LA burns, what is good for melting greenland might burn down or flood the mainland.
we treat PR and some of our other non-state territories like crap. it's interesting when you compare it to, say, the caymans or bermuda, which might be nicer than most of england outside the really posh areas of london.

I did. I can't find one source that states Greenland is vital to our national security.
I thought maybe you could provide that information, since you keep repeating it. Unless, you're just making things up?

I provided you a source the other day, you milksop. Must I go out of my way to link it for you again?
But it should be obvious without sources, Donkey. Much of this is just common sense for anyone with a globe and a general understanding of world history for the last 50-75 years. Greenland is of huge economic, military and ichthyological importance to America.

I read your source. It stated that Greenland controlled a potential shipping lane, if the ice ever melts and it needs help developing its infrastructure.
Nowhere in that document did it make the case that Greenland was vital for US National Security.
Kudos on using "ichthyological importance" instead of seafood provider.
Trump supporters: we want inflation to end, grocery prices to go down, $2 gas and to deport every brown person in America.
Trump: we're invading Greenland!!!
Trump isnt invading Greenland. However, Greenlanders want independence from Denmark.
BREAKING: Greenland has announced a desire to obtain independence from Denmark in the wake of President-elect Trump’s comments about buying the island territory, per the Hill.
A majority of Greenland citizens, and it isn’t close, want independence from Denmark. Doesn’t mean it becomes a US state, it means they choose their own fate. And perhaps an alliance with the USA.

Greenland is a strategic location because the easiest route for Russian ships to access the open ocean is between Greenland and Iceland.

MGGA!
This is a bunch of nonsense.
Greenland is already a independent entity which choose to stay with Denmark because they provide the support for these 57,000 people.
A movement developed in favour of independence, reaching its peak in the 1970s.[70] As a consequence of political complications in relation to Denmark's entry into the European Common Market in 1972, Denmark began to seek a different status for Greenland, resulting in the Home Rule Act of 1979. A referendum was held on 17 January 1979. This gave Greenland limited autonomy with its own legislature taking control of some internal policies, while the Parliament of Denmark maintained full control of external policies, security, and natural resources. The law came into effect on 1 May 1979. The King of Denmark, Frederik X, remains Greenland's head of state. In 1985, Greenland left the European Economic Community (EEC) upon achieving self-rule, as it did not agree with the EEC's commercial fishing regulations and an EEC ban on seal skin products.[71] Greenland voters approved a referendum on greater autonomy on 25 November 2008.[72][73] According to one study, the 2008 vote created what "can be seen as a system between home rule and full independence".[74]
On 21 June 2009, Greenland gained self-rule with provisions for assuming responsibility for self-government of judicial affairs, policing, and natural resources. Also, Greenlanders were recognised as a separate people under international law.[75] Denmark maintains control of foreign affairs and defence matters. Denmark upholds the annual block grant of 3.2 billion Danish kroner, but as Greenland begins to collect revenues of its natural resources, the grant will gradually be diminished. This is generally considered to be a step toward eventual full independence from Denmark.[76] Greenlandic was declared the sole official language of Greenland at the historic ceremony.[2][4][77][78][79] In 2019, during his first term as U.S. president, Donald Trump proposed the idea of the U.S. purchasing Greenland from Denmark, reiterating it in the lead-up to his second term, beginning in 2025.[80] On 14 January 2024, Margrethe II abdicated the throne to her son Frederik X.[81]

Yes but you're dealing with products of the US educational system, who have difficulty dealing reading multiple syllables words and ingesting more than two strands of an argument.
Meanwhile, Danish landowners and green energy producers (along with a few Norwegians) seem to be quietly taking over the north of Scotland by buying much of it up. Anders Povlsen owns much of Sutherland and 13 different estates and buys anything that comes on the market, the other Danish fashion mogul Kristianson isn't far behind, and neither are the two Norwegian tetra Pak heiresses.Danes are in charge of many of the wind farms in Scotland, as well as the forests. It's quite stealthy but these guys are seriously rich. Denmark and Norway are producing so many entrepreneurs and international conglomerates these days. They're expanding and certainly won't give up a stake in Greenland's mineral wealth, however passive.
I can't see the Greenlanders, many of whom are part Danish and speak Danish not English, giving up a link with a country with the highest standard of living and best educational system in the world in order to join a country on a par with India. Danes have something like 6 years longer life expectancy than Americans. Greenlanders have a far higher standard of living than Inuit in god forsaken Alaskan villages. Who would want a bunch of brash Americans coming into your country to ruin it and take away it's minerals?

I appreciate you've only just learned that there is a place called 'Greenland', but if you wanted a bit of further information, they've been talking about independence and being self-sufficient for decades.
This has nothing to do with Trump's demented ramblings, and they don't want to ditch Denmark for the USA.

I think one disconnect we have is you probably don't consider anything of vital importance to US security. Do you think Alaska is of vital importance to US security, or do you just consider it a low GDP burden like Vermont? If you do this Alaska is important, list the reasons and then apply those factors/reasons to Greenland.
Anyway, I don't think you read the document too closely. Page 6, pages 7-8, Figure 3 on page 9 (should be enough for anyone to see the strategic importance of Greenland to the US), page 13, page 15.
But like I said, this is common sense for any adult with a general understanding of world affairs. The Arctic region is critical going forward. Natural resources, shipping, missiles, space, territory, location, fish, etc. We need Greenland for national defense and security, as well as economic prosperity and security. You would be in a small minority of people who can't see any military, economic or security value in Greenland. Russia, China, Denmark, UK, Norway, and many other sure place a HIGH value on it.

Pure fantasy. None of those countries place high value on it. It’s a welfare state of Denmark. Denmark is actually in the process of giving Greenland its independence. If it was so valuable Denmark would be keeping it.
