Except you left out that Sifan didn’t medal in her first Olympics, when she was 23 (older than Valby)
Good point. Would be interesting to compare age progression times.
That would make 3 total Olympics. 2016 800 15th and 800 5th
I also didn't include any of Sifan DL and WC. Lets see how PV does in 2025 WC and DL.
Its going to take more than just elliptical training to get to Sifan level.
Bottom line Mark and PV have a lot of work in front of them just to get PV in contention. Especially how fragile PV is injury prone at such a "young" age.
Again, I stand by what message is being portrayed to our young USA teenage runners.Shoe companies gotta sell shoes to make a buck. Hopefully PV dad got a good "front end" contract.
Scannell rocks ;)
You’re comparing Valby to possibly the greatest female distance runner of all-time? Hassan has run 1:57, 3:52, 8:18, 14:13 (soft PR), 29:07, 65:15 and 2:13.34 with multiple WC and Olympic medals including Gold Medals in the 1500m and Marathon? Valby just doesn’t have the leg speed to get anywhere near those times.
We’re all looking forward to her 3000m race, but her time is likely to be around 8:40, which is about WR 10000m pace for 30% of the distance.

tried to make it clear Ingrid put in way more running volume than Parker ever has
she did about 100-120 week much of the year, brought it down closer to 70 and added XC-Skiing when the weather made sense to do so
i would say cross-training accounting for 25-50% of total volume capacity (realizing non-impact volume = 2.618x impact volume) during the most extreme months (be it cold or super hot) of the year is a great way for runners to get a little bit of a mental break from the usual grind, but also some relief for the connective tissue and there is the possibility one could learn to use their body a little better and thus slightly increase overall athleticism
I've been rewatching NCAA Championships while running on the treadmill.
She DESTROYED the fields in both the 5000 and 10,000. Those races were an absolute joke for her. She essentially soloed 14:51 and was waving to the crowd before obliterating the field in the 10.
It's obvious that Valby has left far more on the table at this age than any world elites, while training in college with limited mileage. So, the potential is there to improve enormously if, and this is a big if, she can increase her mileage. As a distance runner, she was arguably the best ever American female at the collegiate level when healthy.

Yes, myself and many others (shoe companies) are comparing PV to Sifan. I would think PV is.
You post of 3k in 8:40 is 30% of WR10k pace proves Scannell point. Elliptical and ARC training won't get you ya to the "next level". Lots work and " experimenting" needed by Mark and team.
The other side of the issue is the "business".For example if you own a shoe company do you put your $$ into a 2:09 women WR runner, 2:18 women USA best or hobby jogger 5kers?
If PV and shoe companies can make a buck$$ off of other " assets " options then both parties understand the rules of the transactional relationship. Going on for ages in sports/life.
Its just at what cost to our younger USA female runners future path to choose.Especially in quick social media society.

How do you think her career PRs will match up with Hassan’s? Lots of hard work and “experimenting” will not improve her leg speed, and I don’t see her ever running faster than 4:05.
I’m not sure what you’re trying to say in your last 2 paragraphs. My post was about running ability and not transactional relationships and other assets. As a sports fan, I’m only interested in performance.

She ran 8:41 a year ago, the day after breaking the record on the 5000. So, I would expect better than 8:40?
I’m not going to put her in Sifan’s class. That would be crazy. However, she was faster in the 3000 and 5000 at age 21 than Sifan was. Just let it play out.
A lot of experts seem offended that she’s been able to have success doing things differently than they would advise her to do it. She trained the way she had to stay healthy (coming off injury) for the college schedule. If she had missed her last CC and T&F seasons, she wouldn’t even be a topic of conversation, and she’d be working a desk job right now.
Offended or threatened? Nothing riles up (some) men like a woman who threatens their intelligence, especially if she is beautiful.
I'd rather have a coach that is open to new ideas instead of being so patronizing. He dismisses her training without seeming to know much about it other than it's what this silly "Parker Valby Parker Valby Parker Valby...blah blah blah" is doing. The way he talks about her is disrespectful and unprofessional, especially considering her success.
Meanwhile he hasn't convinced me he knows much about cross training other than it's what he tells his injured athletes to do. Meanwhile, when was the last time Parker Valby was injured?
As for those who compare her to faster runners, why does the bar have to be so high for her training to be validated?

Exactly. He even said Grant was cross training a year ago. I don’t understand the issue. He said it’s like a circus at the meets with the media following her around. “You can’t get near her,” he said. Did he try to “get near her?” it sounds like he’s speaking from experience. I’ll bet he did try.

College for her, is over, and now she’s going to be compared to other American professional runners and perhaps internationally. Moving forward, her NCAA achievements will be come less and less important.
She made an Olympic team as a 21 year old. How many American distance runners have done that in the past 30 years?
Kessler accomplished it within the last 5 months and Nico Young is only 2 months older than Valby. Kessler finished in 5th place, behind only the 4 1500m super stars. Young is closer to the WRs than Valby, and his 1500m speed gives him a greater upside.
