only team that was able to challenge southwest teams today - SW go 1-2-4. all that talk about how california runners can't run in the mud well look at this!!
I mean, I think it still stands though. Englegardt and Blade are certainly far better than their results today, Trabuco Hills as well. Wouldn’t even say it’s their fault, just CA doesn’t have swampy courses like this.
I agree that the Cali girls are better than the performed today, but between last year and this year, I feel like we have to ask ourselves: at what point are they simply being overrated?
Hedengren said in her interview that she hasn't run in a course like this before, yet obviously it didn't hinder her much. (it's a bit different from Utah to Oregon vs Cali to Oregon clearly, but I'm sure that my point stands to some degree)
Also isn't the mark of a champion someone who can run incredibly despite the conditions or circumstances?
ALL of the California girls are 0/2 on this course... Surely if they are as good as they've been said to be, at least one or two of them would've challenged for the podium either last year or this year...
Jane’s dad (John, all-American at BYU) is a certifiable genius. He’s taken a very thoughtful approach to training Jane and dealing with her setbacks (not always injuries; she’s had some health issues at times). She’s got a bright future.
Tuohy beat Chemiel by 18 seconds (16:37 to 16:54) in 2018 setting the NXN record. Tuohy was only a junior that year though.
Hedengren ran in completely crap conditions today much like Tuohy did in 2018.
...The following year, her senior year Tuohy ran slower in better conditions and was just barely ahead of Ewert and Thorvaldson (17:18, 17:19xx, 17:19xx)

"a 40 second win with a course record.almost unheard of at nationals in this day and age. i don’t even want to know how high this speed rating is gonna be."
I predicted Sadie would get 10/11th and was correct. She is better on the track! Has HS mile record 4:28. She was over 1 minutes behind Jane! She's not even the best in CA in XC! She's 5th in CA behind very under-rated Chiara Daly of La Jolla who might win Footlocker next Sat. Sadie should have done Footlocker but it's lost most of its prestige

I second this.
Check out his Youtube channel: "John Hedengren". He has plenty of videos including some regarding how he's used AI to identify running mechanics, to help target specific weaknesses.

and Tuohy won by 40 seconds in 2017
Got it. ...I thought you were referring to her then NXN record performance!

Agreed! For years the argument was that CA had an advantage because they were able to peak for state and FL at the same time while athletes from other states had to try and stretch their peak over several weeks. The top CA runners should have no problem working their way through their different rounds without killing themselves and still be fresh enough to compete at NXN or FL. Tough course conditions shouldn’t affect them any worse than anyone else.

She ran 16:24 at Clovis setting the course record, pretty sure we can rate her at least higher than the 5th best in CA
as impressive as Hedengren was, and she was, the field was incredibly impressive to me. In 2017 17:40 got 3rd I believe. Today that would have been ~15th. 12 seconds faster than Tuohy was in 2017 in probably similar conditions - more wet today, but 2017 was 2nd race so more chewed up. Hedengren seemed to pace this better than Tuohy did - a little slower thru 2K, similar at 3K and stronger final 2K. The 2018 course record in much better conditions than either today or 2017 was not a great race for Tuohy, certainly not as good as her 2017 race.

CA folks not overrated at all. Top CA girls and boys compete very well all over the country in xc and track. In fact both Engelhardt and Blade have run right with Hedengren and Leachman on numerous ocasions, winning some and losing some.
Plenty of CA kids have also won at NXN, either backing up a ranking, or in an upset.
So what's the reason then? Simple, it's the cold and wet. Just very tough in 2023 and 2024 for warm weather kids. Sure there are exceptions, but on the whole 40f in the rain is no fun.
Lastly, Hedengren now at her best ever fitness. If she holds that into spring, the CA girls will compete better on the track, but Jane will be tough to beat.

how about we don't ask such stupid questions? Buchanan got 3rd

Bad coaching is California has killed their chances. No California coach understand cross country like Brosnan and Soles did.
