None of the oles hate power (at least the current or recent ones) and there isn't really any reason for the hate on here other than a few people in an echo chamber salty that they weren't fast enough to get on the team
An impressive, but perhaps ill -advised performance. Sometimes I wonder what these coaches are thinking. I’m not so sure that 3K time will make nationals. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Lars run faster after running 8:24 solo two weeks ago. That’s not saying he can beat Bati. But he won’t have a 5K and the drive to and from Northfield in his legs this weekend.
I suspect it was a conference simulation type weekend for Mo. He might race another 3k at some point or just do miles from now until conference. Then he could probably just go as fast as needed in the 5k and try to get a fast 3k or just do a last chance 3k the next week.
~3 seconds faster would have been nice in the 3k, but he got the 5k out of the way and Mo doesn't really have any pressure until conference.
Conference simulation for a guy that's going to win all his races by a lap? Why would a junior be worried about the MIAC race? He's raced it twice already in his career. I remember he did the same double in several same day meets his freshman year, so I guess this is improved coaching.
Seems like a strange methodology, but to each their own.
As to the Power commentary, go to the old MIAC XC threads and you'll learn everything you want to know. Lots of not so good commentary about the big man.
Ego, inability to get along with other coaches, taking credit for Phil’s successes, gutting team traditions. You name it. Alumni want their own in control and the rest of the MIAC eagerly awaits when Phil’s recruits graduate this year. A few juniors are fastish, likely from following the seniors. Power also made many proposals to the MIAC conference meeting that solely benefit his athletes and unabashedly fought to prevent the MIAC from using a neutral course because he’s afraid of losing the advantage the Oles gain from training on the Carleton and St. Olaf courses every day.
I wonder how many MIC teams point their recruits to these threads? A frat guy at a church school is quite the paradox. I know one his former decathletes and he has some interesting stories.
I think a lot of this is jealousy that he has some success while looking like he's never run a step in his life and applying very unorthodox training philosophy. I saw him running to put the break cones out on Saturday and he looked like a baby hippo missing a leg. I've seen it said many times that the Ole success has long been in spite of coaching. I assume that was meant to apply to his predecessor.
Maybe my math is wrong but wouldn't all of Phil's recruits be gone? I wasn't recruited until my last few months of my junior year. didn't he retire in 2020?

On God, the Kansas City Chiefs and Andy Reid hate are a good analogy to St Olafs / Power's. They've both: won over and over again and it's getting boring for everyone else. Consistently squashed any speculative preseason hopes other teams raise when the postseason rolls around, compounded by the rest of their division (/ the MIAC) frankly just really not being on the same level as them right now (at least in XC). Some fans of those other teams get exasperated at when they have singular studs (like MVP Lamar / Mo Bati) but still lose. Their team has had a disproportionate amount of playoff games held at home, and between that and the refs there's calls of foul play. (St Olaf and Carleton have by far the best facilities in the conference, and non Northfielders say that tips the scales in their favor every conference meet.) And now to the coach(es), who were athletes of the sport but not all that successful themselves, more of a student of the sport, and that's the haters first talking point about why they aren't qualified. "Ego" is screamed because there's an expectation of success. And finally, every smack talker's supposed hail Mary for why he should be fired: "He's fat."
Oh, can't forget the rumors of satanic voodoo magic witchcraft within their team. (in Olaf's case: Power opening the garage door last weekend to cool off the indoor track facility.)

Phil retired in 2019, so the class with Kosche and Cassidy was his last class.
Will Kelly and friends were very open that Phil didn't recruit them. Although, from what I understand Power told them they would hire a distance coach that Spring. Maybe that's some of the animosity. And to wit, Power wans't always that fat. I remember him running around the arb when he started coaching.
I for one want the Oles to continue to be good, primarily want to beat them when they are at their best on their home course.

This is a good reference, but I’d say Bati is more like Wemby on the 23-24 Spurs. The Ravens have some dawgs!

Having the best facilities is an advantage none of the other teams have. So St. Olaf should be good. If they weren’t, people would have a lot of questions about what was going on. Not every school can afford to invest in running like St. Olaf. I have so much more respect for Johnson at Augsburg doing something with nothing or Maxwell at St John’s enjoying the best program finish in over a decade without the same resources the Oles have.
Big news from the abby, multi time conference championship Dr. Tommy Allen will be making his season debut at the very creatively named St. John’s-St. Olaf dual. The Johnnies DMR and 4 x 800 just became dangerous!
I know the Johnnies don’t take Indoor seriously and that Maxwell doesn’t like Power, but it’s hilarious they are running a meet together and most distance races are all Johnnies or all Oles. That is some petty, passive aggressive ish.
I love that they just have three guys running the 5K, working together for a nice early season PR. I see Minnesota State has a good field and they don't need pacers either. It's refreshing to see people just compete and run fast without needing a pacer like the Oles seem to need.

I don't blame Maxwell at all. If you agree to run a meet you should bring your team. Power didn't enter a single runner in his top 15 from cross country. Does he really think his team is so good he'll send B-teamers to race the Johnnies studs? That's embarrassing for the Oles and insulting to the Johnnies.

Ummm, from the look of the entries, either the Johnnies do not have a very deep team or they aren't taking it seriously either. No times for the 3 5k guys, but one sub 5 min guy in the mile? Looks like it's mostly a meet for the sprinters and some field events.
Tyler Smith vs the frosh phenomenon Ihrke in the 800 and Rupnow coming off a huge 600m PR, Gabe against all the Tommies in the K, and the Mac long distance trio caving off again in the 5K.
Over in Menononinimee, Lelinga looks to take the conference lead in the 800 and Hootie is set for his first of many sun 9:00 3Ks. Lars and Calvin are also taking the two day journey out of state to get a national qualifier at Wartburg.
While most of the Oles are sitting and nobody knows what the Johnnies are doing, the rest of the MIAC is heating up!
When will Brendo give the Tyler Smith vs Tyler Smith 600m matchup? He missed a big chance this weekend at Minnesota State!
The SW Minnesota State version has the edge is speed, but to paraphrase Talladega Nights, the Gustie version knows "you don't run with your eyes, you run with your heart."
The Johnnies are not using the supposed “new seedings” at their meet tomorrow . Interested parties want to know whether Power will step off his high horse to allow his athletes to compete or send another passive-aggressive all-MIAC email to complain.
After watching Lelinga’s 600m I’ll be very surprised to not see sub 1:54 this week and 1:50 Outdoor. Greatly improved XC base and the raw speed. Can’t wait to see him race little Ihrke.
