They pretended introducing tariffs is about protecting working class jobs but it's really just to get working class people to pay more tax.
Their have been rebellions caused by things like this in the past, nowadays people gleefully vote for it 🙁
I'd gladly pay a little bit more to protect working class jobs. Slightly cheaper crap at Walmart doesn't compensate for people losing jobs and getting addicted to meth or working for minimum wage at a casino that took its place. It's also a national security issue when we can't build anything anymore. So tariffs = good.

Wait I voted for trump because he told us groceries were too high and he’d make them lower. Now you are telling us even higher is ok. I am working class so cool you are “protecting my job” but no good if I cannot pay my bills and feed my family
The purpose of tariffs is to make it cheaper for companies to stay in the US than it is to offshore.
That certainly can be one of the objectives, yes. Protectionism is a thing (and not automatically a bad thing).
But what that means perforce is that things will be more expensive. If you continue to buy them from a foreign source, the tariffs have added to their price; if you buy them US-made, the tariffs protected the higher price that the US company had to charge. Tariffs raise prices.
Coupled with abolition of the income tax, [tariffs] will result in overall bigger federal coffers and less of a burden on current taxpayers.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Good one!
"[Tariffs] will result in overall bigger federal coffers"--well, only if Americans are putting more money in those coffers. The income from tariffs comes from the Americans who are receiving the goods, of course; the exporting country doesn't pay the tariffs.
"...and less of a burden on current taxpayers." Less of a tax burden--that's automatic, if you stop levying taxes--but the funds still have to be paid. And, in contrast to the situation with a progressive income tax, lower-income people will be hit disproportionately hard. (I do acknowledge that that's an outcome that some people would prefer.)
Serious question for freetrade lovers: Why are you worried about other nations enacting counter-tariffs? If your theory is true that tariffs are bad, other nations would have no incentive to place tariffs on our exports.
Some of us just want cheaper groceries. Will tariffs accomplish that?
No, of course not. Tariffs are the equivalent of sales taxes and automatically raise prices.
The raging trumper who thinks the US invented trade in the 1940s also has never heard of comparative advantage.
I am shocked!
In a few weeks I will solicit explanations for how Trump plans to cause deflation as he promised. Something that has not substantially happened since the Great Depression. I look forward to a productive conversation.
You aren't coping very well with your Teams loss. Quit wasting precious moments of your life on basically nonsense. You're welcome
I’ve wasted precious moments of my life on this nonsense for a decade or more. Has nothing to do with the election
I am interested to hear how you think Trump will decrease prices as he promised.
Not an expert on this but I have read some arguments against them that seem to make sense.
Well, would you like to pay 30-40% more for your running shoes? If yes, be happy for the New Orange revolution!
Do you believe in people earning a living wage, or should people have to be willing to work for low wages to compete against literal slave labor (China), government-subsidized industries (China, Japan, tons of places), limited or no environmental regulations (China, Mexico, India, etc.)? I would rather buy less stuff, pay more for quality stuff, and (most importantly) support people being able to raise a family. I don't need a cheap, inflatable, novelty-oversized jack-o-lantern anyway.

If/when the tariffs raise prices I plan to hold Trump accountable just as we did Biden. This should not be controversial.

No you won’t. The previous round on inflation was from pandemic stimulus restructured the labor market of the bottom quartile significantly. It was hugely positive for poorer worker and people like you had a conniption fit.
We’ve already had inflation to protect lower class jobs and Trumpers blood pressure is still through the roof. At least the beauty of revealed preferences will show what you all really think if/when the serious tariffs hit.
A week ago - groceries are too expensive get the Dems out.
Today - it’s ok even we have to pay even more at the grocery store. As for producing jobs we have close to full employment already.
You've got to be joking about "jobs." The pay for many of these jobs is now so low compared to what it takes to live that it's ridiculous. We've been riding the "cheap goods" thing for a while now, which is probably OK if you have a non-outsourced job and you can pretend, but not sustainable as a country.
p.s. Same thing for the pretend affluence of not having kids. You may get to pretend to be successful for a while, but as a country it's not sustainable. Ask Japan.
