Jimmy Gressier, who is 2 orders of magnitude below Jakob, has run a 59'55" half on his try in Paris on a non flat course.
His best is his 12'55" for 5000m, equivalent per the athletic tables to 7'32"
So 15" slower than Jakob.
Or 1'45" for a half marathon.
It means that fresh on a non flat course he could run 58'10", give or take a lot of "ifs".
It s weather perfect, full competition level, flat...and he will not be 100% fresh but close.
58' flat would not surprise me.
After 717 I do not know what to expect anymore.. But I agree with 58-something as a stellar debut off a DL final, and a possible result. Anything below that time would be otherworldly.
Kiplimo is no more threatened by Jakob at the half marathon than he would be at World Cross Country, that is to say, not at all.
Is that why he pissed his pants and didn't race the Olympic 5000?
It is actually an IQ test. IF you think Jakob can currently finish within 30 seconds of the world record in the half marathon, you CANNOT have a high IQ.
If Almgren could run 59,23 in his first attempt at the distance I'm sure Jakob (who's much stronger since he's also several times Europe champ in trail) can run 57.xx right of the bat.
Jakob and Jacob will push each other to 57 low if the weather is good enough.
Come on. He hasn’t even run a fast 10000m yet.
Andreas Almgren ran that HM time a month after running his first ever 10k.
I think a lot of you guys really do not understand what professional runners know about what they're capable of based on how their training looks when their entire life revolves around running.

but Almgren didn't have a DL final on his legs. I do agree there's no way he can't break 59, or even 58 right off the bat if he's fresh with his training.
Henrik ran in Copenhagen a couple of years ago. That ended with a DNF. His brother is a different story. He will try to follow Kiplimo every step of the way, if he starts the race. If he finishes it, he will set a new personal distance record. He has never - like ever - run longer than 20 km. At least the guy loves to compete.

Part of me thinks he will just go all in with Kiplimo but then I think he could also run somewhat like Florence '21 DL 5000 and hang back a bit. Obviously its a lot different on the roads and if he lets Kiplimo go he may well never come back. Who else is capable of going with Kiplimo - maybe Sawe but even he might hesitate to go at WR pace I feel.
Certainly this intrigue has brought a lot of attention to this race which even without Jakob would be very high calibre (along with Valencia HM) but would be great to see Jakob do it
John Wesley Harding, if Jakob went all out in his current fitness, what do you think he has in him? I am not talking his lifetime potential. I often disagree with you but I would respect your opinion. I would guess Kiplimo, who ran 12:40 this year, is probably doing that off roughly 3:32xx ability, whereas with Jakob we have 3:26 and ??? (maybe 12:35-12:40). So then one can see how Jakob would not be able to hang with Kiplimo as we get farther and farther from 5000m. The only issue that could be a wild card is if Jakob is some super responder to the super shoes, which I am not sure because he doesn’t race on the roads much. I think 59:00 is likely with an absolute current ceiling of 58:10, which would be completely unexpected but still remotely possible.
I think Jakob could run a fast half. There are example of runners, like Rupp, who couldn't translate good 5k/10k results to the half. Idk if a 1500 on Friday/half on Sunday is the best way to find out what you're capable of running but I like the fearlessness of it if he's going to race. Copenhagen is a fast course.

What Banana Bread said (great username). We're never going to hear this kind of talk about Josh Kerr or Hole Cocker. Ever. Buddy can step all over them (most of the time) in the 1500 then turn around and beat down the half marathoners.
Kerr ran 61 for hm last Dec in America's Finest City
Jakob's a great XC runner too. Sub-58:00 at worst if he runs.
The problem is he has to do it 2 days after a 1500m final he cares a lot about. If he can run sub-58, he's automatically the GROAT (greatest range of all-time). For reference, Mo ran 3:28 and 59:23 2 months apart. I have no trouble believing Jakob would break 60-mins next week, and wouldn't be shocked to see him run 58-mins but sub-58 is pushing it.
Henrik ran this last year and did a DNF. If Jakob runs I predict he paces his brother. Henrik does so much for him and they have trained together since Jakob started.
