If you are injured from running, or tend to get injured from running...running on a treadmill will not be an injury preventing cross training, or acceptable safe substitute...because it is exactly the same as running.
It isn't, as it is on a totally different surface that is shock-absorbent in a way a track or the roads aren't. It is consequently easier on legs and joints. Aqua-jogging is another form of running training that is cross-training. But you really need a form of training that is easier on the brain.

to me the interesting bit about Valby is that she goes against type.
The distance running girl runner type is usually an earnest overachiever like Jenny Simpson or a quirky girl like Alexi Pappas or quiet studious type like Kara Goucher. Or a 'running is the only thing that matters' person like Jordan Hasay.
We haven't had a good-looking vivacious sorority girl/cheerleader type. Ever?
Some people look at Valby and say 'huh? She's not one of us.'
and others look at her and say 'wow yowza great news.'
