Kerr was the better runner yesterday. But it is a fact that Jakob missed several months of training. And to deny that would be intellectually dishonest, yet you and several other people do so simply because you dislike Jakob's personality...
If you line up at the start you are the same as everyone else in the race. No one cares what injuries you've had or how your training went. Everybody has their issues to deal with. Once the gun goes off you win or lose on your merits. No excuses.
This sort of thinking also promotes only showing up when you are at your absolute best, instead of having the best athletes compete more often, which would suck for the viewership of the sport.
They try to ask him if he’s going to adjust his preparation for Paris at all and he says that if he’s winning 18 out of 20 times then that’s a good success rate and he doesn’t need to change his approach. The interviewer (Mac Fleet) agreed with him at this point, though it seems Jakob is missing a key point: it’s consistently working in races where he has a rabbit the first 900 meters but has had a very low success rate in non-rabbited races, which is what Paris will be.
I would have expected him to recognize this so was surprising to hear his response and how he mentally groups the Diamond League and championship-style races into the same bucket.
The recency bias in this forum and the press is astounding. What jacob "knows", is he is still faster than kerr by several seconds in a race that takes less than 4 min. He's faster in the mile, he's faster in the 1500. (And faster by 7 sec in 3k and 30 sec in 5k)
He has had an injury year and kerr still needs a miracle to beat him.
Lets cool our jets and see if the "norwegien way" is debunked (as Outside magazine stated) after Jacob gets healthy. He missed months of training folks. Good for Josh, but hope he doesn't get comfy with a 1 sec advantage while jacob isnt 100%.
A big part of championship racing is showing up fit, healthy, and ready to perform at one’s best. If Jakob has failed to do that, it’s his fault. No excuses.
Why do you have to be so insufferable all the time? I can agree that Jakob hasnt been bulletproof in championship races(1500m that is), but he has won almost every single other race since he won the olympic medal. Having to say "less often" after it has happened once more after a injury riddled year is just obnoxious and I am sure you know it. Why do you carry yourself this way?
That you take an observation of fact about Jakob as though someone has insulted your mother says more about you than me.

No, it doesn't suggest that. It says if you're fit enough to race then you compete without excuses.

This thing about Jakob under performing in 1500m champs -I think that picture is distorted. F.ex the loss in indoors WC -this was a race with very little prestige and competition. Aside of Jakob only Tefera was a factor -a guy who never has run sub 3.30, and at the time also was 2 sec away from his own indoor pb in every race. I will therefore claim that Euros, where Jakob was up against peak Katir and peak Garcia Romeo, and Wightman and Lewandowski, and never lost, despite his unpaced front running, matters the more -this overall champs weakness seems constructed…(Pretty much based on one singel champs loss in 2022, if sickness is taken inti account).

Faster times mean nothing against who crosses the line first. Even Jakob knows that - which is why he face-plants to get across the line first, and comes up with excuses when he gets beaten, or puts his competitors down. Like the song says about breaking up - losing is so hard to do.

There are never excuses -a winner is a winner. But every athlete is entitled to explain his loss, for multiple reasons. F.ex in order to learn from it, like Wightman did after the 2021 season…

The Euros matter more than Worlds?! Wow, that’s a new one. Simone Biles would be impressed by those mental gymnastics! 😆

I agree, it’s important to learn from one’s failures. Going one for five in world 1500m championship races suggests Jakob isn’t learning, which is the OP’s point. Or maybe Jakob just isn’t good enough.

IMO you are right in some of what you are writing. But the problem is that you over do things into the extreme. And with far too little of nuances. I get it that you think some of us “defenders” are driven by feelings, but what do you answer to claims of you being the same..?

"Face-plants". You obviously never had to sprint to the line and lean as much as possible to win a race. It happens. That's called determination, guts, giving your all.
I have never liked Jakob but I respect the fact that he gave all he had. You are just pissed the guy you hate won the race.

What you don't get is that the explanation for a loss is that you are beaten. Anything else is an excuse.

I don't feel the same way as you do. I don't think I over do things or go into extremes. I express views that others don't like or agree with. But that is because they have feelings about runners that I don't.

Well, in some of the champs (WC 2017,19 and 2022) I think he wasn’t good enough. But he was in Oly Tokyo, and the Euros. And of course one would hope he has learned something from being sick, but things like sickness may be hard to control efficiently… Think also your preferred athletes has been sick now and then…
What you don't get is that the explanation for a loss is that you are beaten. Anything else is an excuse.
No, I don’t agree. I think not acknowledging a loss is an excuse. But then you have to make a complaint. Jakob hasn’t made any complaints, so he clearly acknowledges his losses. But he gives explanations -you can call these so bad explanations that they stink or something. But they are still explanations. We can discuss if this explanations are good, relevant or accurate -but a human being should be allowed to explain himself if he feels the need. -That doesn’t mean everybody have to buy everything expressed in the explanation… But I personally think that Jakob’s explanations often (not always) are very good (given all I know from context)…

Fair enough. But my point was only that I think both you and I somewhat are coloured by feelings. But that these feelings just are a little different…And that sometimes knowing that can prohibit us from being too extreme or overdo things (not saying it’s always wrong to be outspoken and clear..).

This is hilarious how high of a standard we hold Jakob to. Finishing second is a failure apparently. Here are the last 4 global championship finishes of the last 4 global champions at 1500M
Jakob I: 2019: 4th, 2021: 1st, 2022: 2nd, 2023: 2nd
Jake W.: 2019: 5th, 2021: 10th, 2022: 1st, 2023: DNS
Jakob has a higher ceiling AND a higher floor than these other athletes. I'm not even sure you can count 2019 against him either as he was only 18 years old and still finished 4th narrowly missing a medal. And nevermind the fact that he has two other gold medals in the 5000m. So tell me, what has Jakob not learned that is holding him back? He's already the best in the world at 1500m championship racing.
