What kind of scholarship do top NCAA runners come in on?

Good advice. I only disagree on one point. Better programs don't pay less f9r equivalent athletes. Worse programs have less funding and the coaches are really bad recruiters.

Agreed. My daughter is a freshmen on a team that qualified for nationals. She ran 4:55/10:30 her junior year. She reached out to nearly 50 schools. The majority did not respond to include Wash U and Johns Hopkins in D3. She ultimately received a 10% scholarship on an elite program. But we were shocked at how many average programs did not respond and at how many who did, wanted her to walk-on. Many of the schools who were in those categories finished behind her school in the regional in the fall. Very odd experience.

I am a Juco runner. Is it slightly easier to get a scholarship at my stage rather than straight out of high school? I have decent grades/times and plan on staying at Juco for one more year before I transfer.

Judging by what I'm seeing here, this is probably no longer true but I went to a B1G school in the late '80s and was a manager. They gave me what was probably 25 percent back then (I want to say $1,500/year on out-of-state tuition that was about $6,000).

I was fully expecting posts like these. We are a successful program. Unfortunately some people simply look at times and make judgments instead of actually getting to know the athletes and their backgrounds. I don't need to prove anything to this message board, just trying to give info on what actual division 1 head coaches can give athletes instead of what outside wannabes think.

Of course there is more to it. But the point was that you can get a 9:00 kid with all of those same qualities rather than the 9:10 kid if you put some work into it. There are no successful distance programs giving scholarships to the level of kids that you described. Not even close. Your definition of success is not the same as real success. Did your team finish top 25 in XC? No. Did your team qualify? No.

What don't you believe? I don't understand. I shouldn't give you more info but she runs for Michigan State. Schools like Maryland, Ohio State, and Indiana didn't respond. Michigan would have taken her as a walk-on even though Michigan State has a better program. It really was random. Some low level programs contacted her while other ones didn't respond to her. And as stated, D3 schools did not respond.

Good for you and thanks for sharing this reality check, as this is probably a more realistic trajectory for many if not most.

This is another great mystery. The Ivies and the top d3 schools, Williams, Amherst, Swarthmore, Pomona etc do not offer academic scholarships (or athletic). They have very generous need based aid, and that's it.

I'd be very curious what d3 school is offering full academic scholarships. Can you perhaps tell us what athletic league they compete in?

I won’t give the athletic league, because that would probably make it too obvious, but it is not a high end name brand DIII school that’s only need based. If you look, you’ll find what you’re looking for. This wasn’t the only school DIII school that I applied to that offered a very good opportunity. I’ll give another I applied to, just for example, Lebanon Valley College.

As far as I’m concerned, I’m selling my academic reputation to bolster the school’s. It is a trade that I am readily willing to make. I’m also not the only person on my team to make the same choice, so it’s not like I’m alone either.

About 15 years ago, I ran a time that'd probably be the equivalent of 9:10 today. Went D3 and underperformed due to the academic workload but I think it was a good trade as it got me in. 1570 SAT (800 math) and received some financial aid, though solely need-based, so I had no debt which was nice. Small college in the greater Boston area :)

Walked on at a mid-major. 50% academic scholarship, scored on conference relays as a freshman + outran scholarship guys in cross. Scholarship as a sophomore covering another like 35-40%. Scored/medaled individually as a sophomore and junior, had athletic scholarship increased to cover the remainder of tuition for senior year and grad school. Solid but not that fast, never made regionals or anything.

Is he talking about Andrew Reginer? He is a freshman at UNC who was on the 4th place DMR team at NCAA's. Looks like he was the 400 leg. Ran 47/1:47 Sr year but as other posters suspected only ran 1:54 JR year. He got unlucky most the money at power 5 schools was gone by the time he broke out which is why he couldn't get money. If he hit the portal next fall he could get some for sure.
