In fact, in February they were doing what most real Olympic gold contenders were doing (or should have been doing), focusing on what is best FOR THEIR PERFORANCE FIVE MONTHS LATER.
If you have the right kind of coach it's clearly possible to absent yourself from the sport for long periods without a loss of form. So who is their coach again?

Last year, Sydney McLaughlin got injured and so stopped competing. This year she has competed a lot outdoors after not competing at all(?) indoors. This year and last year, Athing Mu's absences have been unexplained. Last year, according to the IAAF, she competed only twice outside U.S. and World Champs, once in New York at 800m in June, once at Prefontaine in spectacular fashion in 1:54.97 in September. She ran 1500m trials and finals at U.S. champs and heats, semis, and final at World's in the 800m. This year, she hasn't competed at all. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the site shows her first competing in 2023 on June 24th and not competing at all this year.

They are above everyone in their events, Femke Bol is a Distant 2nd to McLaughlin, only Mary Moraa and Keely Hodgekinson have shown they are a threat to Athing Mu, but Mu would be favored over either of them.
I regularly see Kersee coaching in LA and haven't see Mu once. Rarely see Sydney and when I do, she's just sat around. Kenny Harrison and others have been working

Surely Mu needs to race soon to get some racing practice in? The Olympics is in 8 weeks…
Sydney has competed in the same number of races this outdoor season as Femke.
Keely has only run one more race this outdoor season than Athing.
Femke Bol has run 14 races in 2024. Many of those races were indoors, but they still were races. Sydney has only run 4 races in 2024.
Keely Hodgkinson has only run 1 race so far in 2024 compared to none for Athing Mu. But Hodgkinson ran 19 races in 2023, compared to only 7 for Athing Mu in 2023.
No matter how someone tries to spin it, the fact is that Sydney and Athing don't race very much.
That is a lot of number crunching for 2 gals you do not care for.

But the 800 is one of those events where you really need to be able to hurt. Training does not get you that like racing. The experience is really important in it compared to other events.
