No reason to think he can't make the team, Abdi did it at 43.
And apparently Abdi is also running Trials this year.. Quite impressive at 47-48.
Didn't know that. Why not, if you qualify and are healthy I suppose. I think it's cool that a guy of his age is still able to make it in. I'm in my middle 40's and understand where he is...staring father time in the face. Fast days are mostly over, but why not enjoy something like this if you can.
I was live-tracking the results with my ex-girlfriend and her husband and their kids and we were talking about how it would be more interesting if countries like Kenya and Ethiopia got allotted 1-3 more slots for the Olympic games. In any case good luck to Galen we are excited to watch the USATF trials and see who comes out on top
This is a troll post, right? Your ex's husband has no problem with you guys texting? And you're cool with being like her emotional flirt but you get nothing out of it - her hubby does the honors?
If you are training for the marathon, your time should be about 3% more than the combination of what you can run for the half.
Galen could have paced better and ran 61:30.
61.5(2)=123(1.03)=126.69.
Id say Galen is in 2:06:30-2:07 shape
He will make the team.
Houston was exactly what he needed.
I also think he'll make the team, but according to your logic, the US will get to send 5 to Paris, right?
There were 4 Americans ahead of him in Houston.
4. Biya Simbassa, 30, USA 1:00:45 5. Diego Estrada, 34, USA 1:00:49 PB 9. Andrew Colley, 32, USA 1:01:39 PB 13. Ryan Johnson, 22, USA 1:02:31 PB
PS. Who is Ryan Johnson? Do I have a half-brother I don't know about? What a scalp for him. From 21st at the West Regional to taking down Galen Rupp right before the Trials.
PPS.
Actually, I'll answer my question.
Simbassa, who was like an NCAA regional guy in college, always runs that type of time in the marathon. He ran 60:37 in Vlaencia in 2022 and 60:42 in Valencia in 2023. But his marathon pb is 2:10:34. Maybe he's not a marathoner.
Estrada isn't a spring chicken. He's 34 and never broken 2:11 in the marathon, hasn't even finished a marathon since 2019. Maybe he too isn't a marathoner.
Same for colley . Colley also has never broken 2:11:22
For those saying his time is slower because he’s 3 weeks out from the marathon - how does that make you feel about the performances of the people running the Trials who beat him? Simbassa, Estrada, and Colley
I wouldn’t actually pick any of them over Rupp but we should give them the same assumptions we give Rupp
If I count as one of those people, my point was that he personally has a history of pretty “slow” half’s relative to his PR potential 3 weeks out from good marathons. Not that everyone has that type of history. Everyone trains differently. Everyone races differently, and judges effort differently. The fact that he got beat by people doesn’t mean much to me because they could have mini tapered for it and he could have trained through, we have no idea where they are at in their blocks or how hard they were willing to push, etc.
we just know that Rupp has run similar times 3ish weeks out from some of his best marathons so my point was to not count him out based on it.

This would have been a lot funnier if you were live-tracking with your girlfirend, her ex-husband and their kids

Biya Simbassa: Marathon 2:10:34 Praha (CZE) 07 MAY 2023 Diego Estrada: Marathon 2:11:54 Chicago, IL (USA) 13 OCT 2019 Andrew Colley: Marathon 2:11:22 Chicago, IL (USA) 08 OCT 2023
Ryan Johnson (two min PB compared to 2023 in Half M). - No marathon time at world athletics.
When I look at the above I would recon that if Rupp runs 2:06-08, I cannot see any of these guys beating him. Of course if they all PB in the half (finishing above him), they could PB in the marathon, but taking of so much time in the marathon from 2023 seems out of reach (Diego's marathon PB is old though so who knows).
I am just guessing, but I would think that Rupp has been in heavier training than the others and will have a great race at the trials. (AT LEAST SO I HOPE!).
Is it true Diego won't race the trials? Any update on Chelimo? Looking at Rupp finishing 5th here and then to say he will get top three at the trials would be pretty impressive. Agreed can't count him out, but he and Abdi will be on the outside looking in. I fully predict both to be top 10 though.

Ryan Johnson, Air Force Academy, not to be confused with High schooler of the same name from Colt's Neck, New Jersey. This kid has great potential. A F. guys remind me of the B.Y.U. runners -great discipline, clean cut, solid foundation, and ability to deal with high level academics and athletics.

Ryan Johnson - Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs.
Freshman times, 8:51/15:27 (3000/5000)(2020) (18)
2022 -8:12, 13:45 (20) (Junior)
2023 -28:20 (10,000) (21)(Senior)
2024 -1:02:31 (22)
I think Ryan Johnson has the potential to become one of America's best marathoners in the next 10 years if everything goes right. These Air Force Academy guys are super tough psychologically. Similar to the Marines in many ways. In addition, they're smart, as they need very high level academics to gain admittance to the Air Force Academy. These guys have super organizational skills /time management as they are busy from 5am right down to 2200 pm daily at the Air Force Academy - everything is mapped out and they have to follow a schedule.
"United States Air Force Academy has an acceptance rate of 13%. Half the applicants admitted to United States Air Force Academy who submitted test scores have an SAT score between 1310 and 1480 or an ACT score of 28 and 33."
This means that Ryan Johnson has a great future with or without athletics as graduation from the Air Force Academy basically guarantees a great career in whatever field he chooses. Most Air Force Academy students choose engineering and other STEM majors. Unlikely that he would have chosen a time wasting major with dismal career prospects.
