If this is a public university and he didn't have authorization to spend the total amount of the dinner and used public funds, then yes that's misappropriation of public funds and can get you fired. Though the right way to handle that is to make him pay that out of pocket.
Has anyone seen this coach's Instagram account? The guy has gone off the deep end when it comes to posting comments regarding his situation. There is NO WAY he is going to be able to get another college coaching position. His previous student athletes are supporting him. But it is getting to the point where it comes across as unhealthy.

I agree with the coach and team. This guy should have been reprimanded, not fired. But his posting is not a good look if he's in the job market. The thing to do professionally would be to say look I messed up and learned_______. Once he explains the situation was he got fired over freaking olive garden, a team that isn't so draconian in its budget would hire him. Few are going to take a coach that publicly comments on his employer like this though. He could have talked to an employment lawyer if he felt he was wrongly terminated - although you probably don't make hiring a lawyer money coaching in the naia.
