I don´t think a 4:01.56 is bad as a season opener. Centro normally run much faster in the high season.
4:01.56 in the mile equals 3:43.6 in the 1500m. If he ran alone his time more or less equals his season opener in Palo Alto 2018 where he ran high 3:40 in the 1500m in a race with a competive field and 2 pacemakers (in that race he and other American top runners, including Chelimo, Engels and Fisher were destroyed by a certain Norwegian teenager).
In 2018 Centro went on to run high 3:31 in the Monaco 1500m in July so I don´t think we shall write him off yet.
That was 5 years ago. That's a long time in the career of a professional athlete. Do you also think he could run 3.31 in another 5 years?
Time for him to hit up brad hudson and start training for the marathon maybe he can get advice former teammate parker stinson
April is too early in the year for me to be convinced he is done. I want to see how he runs in July. Centro is only 33, same age Willis was when he won bronze in Rio.
Centro is awesome and has the OG Gold. But he is done in the 1500/mile. That's okay. He has options.
Your 3:31 reference is from FIVE years ago. It is time to move on (for all of us).
I did not watch the video because I am poor and do not have Athletic+ or RunnerSpace+, but I think it should be noted only 1 person in the ex U of O squad broke 4 minutes--3:59.45 by Sam Prakel... Charlie Hunter 4:00.5 and Johnny Gregorek 4:03.5.
One could say "well, the other three saw Centro bomb the lead off, so they simply jogged it in to finish race". This could be true, but I tend to think running this race is significantly harder than your typical mile race. For the most part you are either running alone or with one other person. It's not the same as going out with a full field of competitors. Especially on the third and fourth legs. Keep in mind that all legs 2, 3, and 4 are all sub 3:55 milers.
So, Centro's result does not seem like as much of an outlier with that in mind. I would not be surprised if he puts up a decent result in a more "standard" race context.
Did anyone belittling this record bother to notice who the four "Irish guys" who set it were? • Eamonn Coghlan (3:49.78i, 1983): current Irish indoor recordholder, former WR indoor mile (x3), WC gold at 5000m, first sub-4 masters miler, ad infinitum) • Marcus O'Sullivan (3:50.94, 1988): 101 lifetime sub-4 miles, 6-time Wanamaker Mile winner • Frank O'Mara (3:51.06, 1986), three-time Olympian, former Irish 5000m recordholder • Ray Flynn (3:49.77, 1982): current Irish recordholder, two-time Olympian This isn't a "non-event," WA record status aside, when the record is held by runners like those. If they could "only" average 3:57.27 running by themselves, it's not going to be easy. The shoes should definitely make it possible, and that says a lot right there.

Yeah, he’s only a little older than Ryan Hill and Chris Derrick.

Not sure why you’d make that comparison. Neither of those guys reached the level of success that Willis and Centro did, nor specialized in the same distance.
