No, Sowinski paced. He went out a bit hot, I think they split 54ish at 400. Overall a great race for Nuguse. Fisher looked great as well, he sat back slightly and finished very well, responded to the moves at the right time over the last 400 and everything.
Would be nice to see the old SEC rivalry with Holloway again.
They just raced at USAs
Do you know what rivalry means? Remember the wars they had in college when Holloway and Roberts held 8 of the top 10 all-time collegiate times. The Roberts had injury problems and he's been trying to get back to form.
I’d expect this, but I don’t think Nuguse would be that vulnerable to it. This is indoors and that makes a huge difference. I suspect if Sowinsky drops off after 900 or 1000 paced at 3:31 that Nuguse will be happy to run a 28.5-29.5 lap or two tempo before uncorking his finish. If he can run 25-27 again for the last lap to 300m, Katir won’t beat him and may in fact be vulnerable to Garcia Romo. Katir outlasts guys in the 1500, in the 3k/5k he can produce more of a kick but it is not like a Woody Kincaid kick even…it’s more a grinding last 600
I can see that happening as well, though I give Katir a little more credit for being able to kick off a fast pace. He was 6th with 200 to go at Worlds and left Kerr, Kipsang, and Cheruiyot trailing. Big test for Nuguse if it really is being paced for 2:20 at 1000 - if he can produce 26 off that sort of pace then even Jakob will take note. I suspect it will end up slower, in the 3:32-3:34 range
Well, I got the winning time right.
Great race by Nuguse. Katir missed his chance by leaving it to 200 to take the pace on, that handed Nuguse the win who was always going to have a better last 50. Also great experience for Nuguse: a messy start and a win against a class field. Can't ask for more than that. He's definitely in the big league

Likely 55.1 for Yared. A little hot (1 second fast) with the altitude factor. To Sowinskys credit he almost made it 1000 meters.
2 second altitude conversion. Also that pacing was pretty bad, Sowinski is usually good
3:31 conversion for Nuguse, 3:32 for Katir, Mechal and Fisher. Not bad
Don't think dodgy conversions are needed here. It was an impressive result without trying to puff it up into something more than it was. It was a 3:33. And 600m of altitude is negligible
Literally a second slower than a sick Ingebrigtsen... americabros... did we get too cocky...

Completely different race than Jakob’s 1500 in Lieven. I’m not saying Nuguse would beat Jakob, but comparing times like it’s a definitive 1:1 misses the mark. There’s the modest altitude, there’s the fact that Sowinski misjudged and split 54.8 through 400, and there’s the significantly more competitive field that Nuguse had to prioritize beating.

The times were solid, but more importantly Nuguse just looks stronger than the competition. He effortlessly glided to the win in the last 100. Right now, I think he’s unbeatable at 1500, and that includes Jakob, but being unbeatable now doesn’t mean too much. Jakob is not 100%, Wightman is hurt, etc. Still, very promising for him, race after race.
