FWIW I'm half Irish. You are free to read about what my Irish ancestors experienced when they came to this country in the 1860s. Still don't believe we or anyone are entitled to reparations.
You probably can, but you are way behind the Native Americans and blacks in terms of deservability. In my opinion, you are behind Hispanics and Asians as well. I mean gimme a break with the Italian bit. Where's your historical oppression in America? You fought against America in WWII, now you want reparations? How about you pay us first, then start asking about us paying you.
Pretty much every culture has been enslaved and had slaves in its history. The Irish have had slaves and been enslaved (in fact, St. Patrick was an English priest who was enslaved by the Irish). As for Italians, Ancient Rome was a hotbed of slavery. Heck, the word slave itself comes from my Slavic relatives, as they were conquered and enslaved by all kinds of empires through the years. Ever read the bible? Israelites were both enslaved and had slaves through their history. Native Americans were both slave owners and enslaved. Africans had slaves, sold people into slavery and there were even black American landowners who had slaves in America. The Chinese had slavery into the 20th century. The Japanese enslaved Chinese (ever heard of the Rape of Nanjing?), and a lot of the South Pacific in the years leading up to and during the second world war. Nobody's hands are clean and pretty much every people have been enslaved at some point.
Be that as it may be, my point is that Native Americans deserve the reparations money more, but they aren't even in the discussion that Newsom and the California legislature is having. Shouldn't any initiative to make reparations extend to those who have been wronged the most?

I’m well aware of the discrimination the Irish experienced on arrival in the US in the 1860’s.
But to your original point, you were mistaken when you said the Irish were slaves, they were not.
I am not advocating for reparations, it won’t happen anyway, but facts do still matter and your original post was full of fallacy.
“The taskforce is looking at when these harms started and finished. Only those Californians who are actually descendants of Black Americans from the 19th century will be eligible. As for amounts, the Guardian cited one attendee at the taskforce meeting who put the number at $350,000 per person: "Max Fennell, a 35-year-old coffee company owner, said every person should get $350,000 in compensation to close the racial wealth gap and Black-owned businesses should receive $250,000, which would help them to flourish." He added, "It’s a debt that’s owed, we worked for free. We’re not asking; we’re telling you." The task force's economic consultant team estimated California would pay $223,200 per person in early December.”
2) Native Americans? Irish Americans? Hispanic Americans? Italian Americans? Asian Americans? There will be a LONG list of people who deserve the same.
Currently there are dozens of financial aid packages available to minority owned business both state and federal. The Black Americans looking for handouts are being looked down upon by the Black Americans who are working hard and being successful without handouts.
Everyone involved is long gone/dead....Why punish people who have no connection to slavery? My people came recently from Europe and I don't believe in collective guilt...
All of society is punished by the resultant inequality in this country, which worsens our education system, our economy, everything. We would all be better off with an end to systemic racially-linked poverty.
What % ”black” do you have to be to qualify? What if you look white or other yet are 50% black. Why do you need reparations? What if you are black but come from a different country in the last 2 generations?

Don't we already have section 8, food stamps, affirmative action, etc?
Correct action - affirmative action has already been paid for decades and in the coming years it will draw to a close.
With that said, why stop at black descendants of slaves? I, along with millions of other patriotic Americans, was harmed by the state during the Wuhan virus state-lock down... where's my reparations for the discrimination and pain endured over the past couple years??
