How did this one get left out? Maybe I missed it?
Or this one...
Think it's time to take a break, ha!!!!
I will contend that Bruce Springsteen, at his peak, could put poetry to a straight-ahead working class rocking beat like no other either before or after. And he used the car and the road repeatedly as a metaphor for the American search for meaning.
This one is a classic, and resonates with symbolism and searching and that sense of desire for fullfillment that characterizes so many of his songs.
"In the day, we sweat it out on the streets
Of a runaway American dream
At night, we ride through mansions of glory
In suicide machines
Sprung from cages out on Highway 9
Chrome wheeled, fuel injected and steppin' out over the line..."
and later:
"The highways jammed with broken heroes
On a last chance power drive
Everybody's out on the run tonight
But there's no place left to hide"
