In a future in which the best young runners can sign endorsement deals AND compete as NCAA athletes, Oregon will become a professional running program comprised largely of athletes who are being paid, who have a complex approach to social media, etc.
The Ducks will be a professional running program. That means they need a pro coach — not an old-school collegiate coach.
Burrito-making experience has to be a factor, too.
Shelby should sue shaumacher. It was his professional responsibility to guide Shelby to the Olympics. His negligence as coach, which at the highest level, includes educating his athletes on testing protocols and pitfalls, resulted in massive losses of earnings for Shelby.

I agree that NIL will be a factor at Oregon going forward. But that still doesn't mean Schumacher is the best choice to be the new head coach.
This was discussed on the Letsrun Podcast. It seems pretty unlikely. They already have a phenomenal distance coach in Ben Thomas. It wouldn’t make sense to have both Jerry and Ben coaching. Also, why would Jerry coach a college team. He has the perfect situation with BTC. He only works 2-3 days a week at the moment, only showing-up at practice for workouts. Why would Jerry take such a Cush job that is coaching professional to coach college kids at Oregon?
Well, I guess I was pretty wrong. I still don’t understand this move. What is going to happen to Bowerman? Will Jerry coach both? Doesn’t Jerry hate doing media? Does he realize that he’ll have to do a lot of interviews as the head coach?

He could follow Vin's lead. Vin wore many hats his last few years in Oregon. To handle all of his jobs, he: a) did the things he wanted to do; and, b) delegated everything else to coaches and administrators.
Vin pulled it off b/c he's Vin. I'm curious to see what Jerry does.

So you are implying Jerry didn’t want the job. You don’t know. But I do agree with as him being a Nike employee they wanted him now they have him. The key will be the staff he brings/hires to run a major track and field program. Sprints/Field events/ Distance coach and all of the staff needed. Great move by the evil empire and I am sure Uncle Phil paid him well to sign on to the U of O job. He is a great coach and motivator and his success will be very helpful for U of Os future recruitment of athletes
Well there you go then, the best money could buy right? All there is to it. Check back and lets see what Florida, Arkansas, Texas, Kentucky, Tennessee etc...have to say about it. Theres more than enough humble pie to go around. So, the joker that commented on "old school collegiate coaches" vs pro coaches....come get some. I want to be an Oregon fan but its really hard to take them seriously.

He has a pool of people in his network to help build the administration side.
1. "Shakes" his go to for horizontal jumps (i.e. Jeremy Fischer). He might not be the jumps coach but he is part of a previously successful fabric.
2. Pascal Dobert as an assistant and to run drills/weight training
3. Andy Downin has his coaching license. Wherever he is now, he is probably a coach of some sort in addition to his day job.

6. Jim Stintzi is in the ranks
7. Peter Tegen is retired
8. Bethany Brewster is in the ranks
9. Matt Tegenkamp
10. Chris Solinsky

Jager is discounted because I dont think he actually has a degree and you need that per university policy. I also realize these are mostly distance runners. But roles need to be filled. Plus, this is the University of Oregon and Jerry is a hallmark coach so he could literally get anyone. The Ducks' own alumni roster runs deep with candidates to serve the coaching staff. This is the Yankees remember! If they wanted to get Carl Lewis they would get Carl Lewis.
I asked John McDonnell after he retired whom he would have recommended replacing him at Arkansas. He replied Jerry Schumacher. The idiot AD Jeff Long (since disgraced due to the KU Les Miles debacle) didn't even ask John.
Well, even tbough I would have gotten Coach's input to consider, I would still have approached the hire as an administrator who wanted to see the program continue the legendary success based on what got them there, balance. Distance and jumps were the bread and butter but they still had to balance the team with sprinters, hurdlers etc... Cant win a conference title with just a few horses and a bunch of dogs. The exception was that McDonnell's distance and jumps were downright elites and world class. The XC program was DEEP with guys that knew how to outwork and grind as a team better than most. A lot of points on the track at nats in those two event areas. There is nobody that can replace Coach McDonnell.
What the AD was able to do was bring in a coach and staff that could maintain a highly competitive, well rounded program that would continue to sustain for the long haul. No they arent winning everything but name 3 other more balanced programs that are consistently winning conference titles and challenging podium spots in all 3 seasons.
My point...Ill be interested in seeing if Schumacher can come even close to what Johnson achieved or Bucknam for that matter. Schumacher would not have been a good fit for Arkansas but maybe he can win a lot of titles with just distance runners in Oregon. Kiss the sprinters goodbye that they've had the past decade that brought home national title trophies as a balanced program.
We do agree that there will be no other to replace McDonnell. We were lucky to be alive and watch him work. Johnson had great results regardless of the reasons his contract was not extended. That by itself will be a great challenge for the new coach and his staff.

I understand your post completely. I also know that John was passionate about the TOTAL program, not just distance. That's why I think he knew Jerry could manage the entire program and coach the distance guys, just like John did. He would not want to hand the reins to a distance guy without knowing that the whole package was expected.
Bucknam has done a good job managing the program. Not great, but good. Arkansas has the 2nd best T&F facility in the US behind Heyward Field in Eugene. Heck, it's one of the best in the world. Chris Bucknam followed a legend that can never be replicated, I totally understand that. But, his distance crews have been good, not great, and their focus on the decathlon (even with the great guy they have now) requires one guy to do 10 events to score once. A great miler can double at NCAAs, a great jumper can double or triple at NCAAs producing more points. That was John's formula, not too complicated. With NIL now in play, who knows? But Schumacher has coached pros now, and can connect those dots with Uncle Phil.
John McDonnell was a High School coach before his time at Arkansas. Why couldn’t Jerry be a good D1 coach? Passion, knowledge and the ability to lead. That’s what you need. sprinkle in the ability to recruit ( I coached x number of Olympian’s) and , yes he just might succeed.
Can't Nike just do NIL deals in the same way all the other corporations are doing them without harming eligibility? Then they can get around the scholarship limitations to have a large enough cohort to win in the jumps, throws, sprints, and distance, not just distance.

I feel like the NCAA must have some limitation to NIL and the schools sponsor otherwise any big school could just get their biggest donor to sponsor everyone. If the NCAA didn't make limitations that would be so stupid.

I don't think they did, NIL is the wild west right now. Tennessee is paying offensive linemen 50K a year through NIL deals, this stuff is gonna blow up soon once the big brands like Nike/Adidas start shelling out big $ to buy athletes regularly.

Anybody dumb enough to have Dobert run drills and oversee strength training when Jim Radcliffe is in the same hemisphere and already works for your program deserves whatever befalls them.
