Competitor is someone who competes, not someone who intended to compete and didn’t.

Nguese is an Olympic qualifier but not an Olympian.

Just like someone who qualifies for the Boston marathon is a Boston marathon qualifier, not a Boston marathoner, unless the actually complete in the race.

He didn’t complete in the Olympic Games. He qualified but that nots completing.

To be an Olympian you need to have competed in the Olympics.

Some would have us believe that a written new year's resolution to start running on January 2 made the person a runner on Jan 1 even though they never ran on Jan 2 or any day after. For the rest of their life they can claim to be a runner.

They are doing that because they lost respect for him when he withdrew from the Olympics. They are spelling all of the Olympians' names correctly.

It does not change the definition of Olympian or competitor.

An Olympian is an Olympic competitor. And a competitor is someone who competes.

Nguese is an Olympic qualifier but he’s not an Olympic competitor. Therefore, he’s not an Olympian.

Same as the 1980 US Olympic qualifiers. They qualified for the games but they are not Olympians.

It’s like a guy qualifies for the 5000m, 10000m and marathon. He competes in the 5 and 10. His name is on the start list for the marathon. However, he withdraws. He’s not an Olympic marathoner because his name was on the start list. That’s weak if you think he is. And it’s that type of weakness that Nguese displayed at the Olympics. He should hang his head in shame for doing that. And I hope it’s just a few of his fans saying he’s an Olympian, not him. If he’s going around saying he’s an Olympian, I’ve lost even more respect for him.

What if an athlete competes in the 1500 but is DQed for stepping on the line? Is he an Olympian? Guessing you say yes. If DQ is Olympian, what if Houlihan won gold in 1500 and then failed drug test after race and was DQed? Olympic Gold medalist? Olympian? DQ is Olympian right?

I think one thing we all can agree on is that it's a good thing Yared didn't risk serious injury at the Olympics by running on his hurt leg. We wouldn't have been able to witness his performance at NCAA XC or this meet in January in South Bend, Indiana otherwise!

SMH....if you can't risk injury in the biggest sporting event and in the biggest race of your life, then when can you risk it? The ncaa XC meet or some dumb time trial in January on your home track? Who saves themselves for a cross country meet over the Olympics? Why is the NCAA 1500 record holder (U.S. High School national record is faster) and Olympian still competing for 5 years of indoor track for a school?

If you don’t compete, you aren’t a competitor. It’s that simple. Placing third in the Olympic trials makes you an Olympic qualifier.

Completing in the Olympics makes you a Olympic competitor and an Olympian.

The very fact that it’s a debatable topic makes his status as an Olympian as debatable.

Some soft ons may argue that having his name on the heat sheet makes him a competitor. Some may argue that he needs to compete to be a competitor.

What does he himself believe? I’m guessing he’s not too proud of what happened over there and he’s more than happy to not call himself an Olympian until he proves it in 2024.
