Can we all agree that wearing a mask for 10 seconds to walk to your table in a restaurant is peak safety farce

Pre-Delta, most places had fully lifted mask mandates and removed all or almost-all restrictions. Delta lead to massive spikes and hospital load again, but there is precedence for what 'good enough' looks like.

If antivaxxers weren't so committed to going to the hospital with COVID, we'd be feeling much better about this whole thing. They've single-handedly kept COVID as a serious issue over the last 6 months or so, so congrats to them? Some people just can't let go of COVID....

You mean 1000 people are dying a day with Covid, not from Covid.

Motor accidents are not contagious. You don't give and spread motor accidents to every single person you pass on the highway.

If we could end motor accidents forever by getting a vaccination and wearing a mask for a period of time, I would do it. I mean it is the law to wear a seatbelt and that is only to save YOUR life, right? Do you tell your kids to take their seatbelts off so that they don't participate in the nanny state?

Except vaccines and wearing a mask for a period of time don't end covid forever - it's something we are going to live with like the flu and any other virus for that matter.

And I actually don't believe it should be law to wear your seatbelt - but I would tell my kids that they should wear one for their own safety and it would be dumb not to - just as how the vaccine has been shown to be effective and it might be in their best interest to get it. Similar to a mask - I would have them be educated on the fact that the virus has a 99% survival rate - and those with complications are generally obese and don't take good care of their health, or are immune-compromised and should be quarantined in the first place. However, the government should not force or mandate these things, it should be up to the individual to determine their risk and what they should do to mitigate the risk themselves. Do we demand that all businesses and people no longer use or cook with peanuts because 1% of the population has a peanut allergy?

"Low enough" has been defined in many places. Both states that I have lived in during the pandemic have had phases in accordance to case counts and deaths. The state that I currently live in recently lifted indoor masking mandates because our case count was low enough.

It's not really about feeling safe. I'm young and healthy and do not feel threatened by Covid. I just find it important to do my part in stopping the spread of Covid when much of our population is vulnerable.

I'm not a scientist or a public health expert. Those are the people who are best equipped to define these numbers and create the guidelines to stop the spread. I believe most states have guidelines in place with exact numbers, so maybe look into that if you need a more defined answer.

Why stop at seatbelts? Maybe just stop requiring insurance to drive. Maybe remove speed limits. Maybe make all cars street legal because the government shouldn't dictate what you can and can't drive.

Except CDC did give guidance that fully vaccinated people don’t have to wear masks last June. They followed data of effectiveness of the vaccine and deemed that risk was very low to be maskless.

However, from uproar from people that felt that is unsafe pressured CDC to change its stance. It’s pretty ridiculous that CDC would be pressured to change its stance on masks.

Wait, you really think these guidelines are determined by health experts by case counts and deaths? Then, how come these guidelines differ so much depending on political makeup of each state?

It’s not determined by health experts at all. It’s all determined by politicians and political climate of the state.

For example in Seattle, it is required to show proof of vaccination, and mask is still required to go to places like a zoo which is outdoors. This is due to political climate of the city and state.

If I go to a zoo in Florida, the policy would be very different. Hmm, how could science and health experts could be so different?
