I’m assuming Ritz ran that at MIS.
I was coaching in Michigan when we went to using that f-ing joke of a course for all classes. I was one of many coaches who were vehemently opposed, and became even more so after the first finals there.
It’s a fraud. It isn’t even cross country. It’s a track meet on trails.
I think that many coaches like it because every kid finishes the season with a PR and they look like geniuses for having their athletes “peak perfectly.”
The best indicator of what kids from Michigan can do are from their Regional or track times.
I was coaching Division 1 (call it A) that year and watched him go by 2 miles in 8:58 I believe. Yes, fast course for sure but I truly believe on average cross country course he would have ran very close to the same with the ups and downs evening out and solid weather. Yes, he was that good.
He ran Footlocker in Florida in wicked hot and humid conditions his senior year, finishing in 14:35 beating Webb by 20 seconds and Hall by 24. The course is rolling but with going out in 4:47 for the mile, conservative by his standards and being cautious with the weather, that was quite a performance. He did not do that when he ran 14:10, we went out a lot harder. But we can agree to disagree;)
p.s. I also voted no and was hoping for the Flint Golf Course, but no dice.
