careful, my post got deleted for saying exactly the same thing. even the op got modded for saying 'she earned it'.
weird.
Every thread regarding an outstanding performance is going to contain PED accusations. It's boring and it's not as if other posters haven't already considered the possibilty.
Not only boring, but the skepticism is largely unfounded, both scientifically and anecdotally, while highly damaging to the sport.
When it comes to elite distance running performances, the same seeming contradiction always arises: if doping explains the fastest East African performances so well, why aren't more non-African women running any faster than Ingrid Kristiansen from 1987?
A closer look at non-African women's all time half-marathon performances:
Taking a 4+ minute margin, I count the following non-African sub-67 performances all time:
- 65:40a Paula Radcliffe GBR 17.12.73 1 Newcastle-South Shields 21.09.2003
- 66:38 Hitomi Niiya JPN 26.02.88 1 Houston 19.01.2020
- 66:40@ Ingrid Kristiansen NOR 21.03.56 1 Sandnes 05.04.1987
- 66:43a Masako Chiba JPN 18.07.76 1 Tokyo 19.01.1997
- 66:57a Kara Goucher USA 09.07.78 1 Newcastle-South Shields 30.09.2007
NOTES:
- Ingrid Kristiansen from 1987 is still among the top-3 non-Africans.
- In the last 34 years, only one Japanese runner was marginally faster, in 2020, and Paula Radcliffe one minute faster, on a downhill course.
- Of these top-5, 4 were on downhill courses ("a") or uncertified ("@").
- Only Paula, on a downhill course, is within the top-100 performances (Kristiansen from 1987 is now #116).
Didn't Russia famously dope many of their women? e.g. Shobukhova?
- the fastest non-annulled Russian mark is 68:45 (ranked #710).
- the fastest annulled Russian mark is 69:20 (ranked outside of the top-1000).
- Shobukhova's fastest annulled performance: 77:00+.
- her fastest non-annulled performance: 77:21.
A closer look, including Africans:
- Number of proven doping performances faster than Kristiansen of 1987: 1 out of 117
- Number of African heritage athletes faster than Kristiansen: 59 out of 61
