Nothing wrong with the current rules. There is no reasonable way to force two jumpers to an eternal jumpoff, and if so, the only reasonable option is to give them both gold as giving them both silver is saying there is no best in the world when there are actually two equally good ones.

There is no practical way to abuse this scheme either in contrast to some comments that question why one would even try in this situation *if* they can shake hands and both get gold. The “if” is key here: if one athlete indeed feels stronger, they can press for the jumpoff, and if neither feels sufficiently confident to do so, the answer is already clear.

Shaking hands and drawing can be done in other games, like chess for example, but players don’t do that even in the final because every player fundamentally has a desire to be *the* best above everyone else.

In this particular case, just going by their body language, Barshim probably gave it away despite having the greater probability of winning the jumpoff.

Thanks. So the normal procedure is jumpoff (unless decided beforehand which was certainly not the case for an olympic final) and any athlete can demand it.

I agree that one cannot force anyone to continue competing, so if both deny jumping further the tie has to be maintained. I still kind of like the idea that as an incentive for a decision they'd get only silver if they both deny a jump-off ;) but it is rare enough not to bother too much about it. (And it would be kind of mean, if they do several rounds of jumpoff without a decision and then decide to quit) There are/were far more ties in other sports as the list someone posted above shows.
