I guess he should have listened to some of you guys and rested as he clearly was unable to run well in August 1997 as he was racing too much. Where were you guys to set him straight?
It is awesome that he's doing this. Ballsy move! He's well aware that if he runs 3:53 he'll be a laughingstock. If he goes mid/low 3:48 (or faster) it'll be a huge success. 3:50 give or take half a second seems most likely though.

If he runs 3:53 he will still be an Olympic gold medalist and not a laughingstock. Not sure why you would think he would be a laughingstock? It makes no sense.

I was waiting for someone to being this up .... But Komen accomplished all this AFTER the 1997 worlds (where he won the 5000m).
After that, the risk/reward ratio was low and since he was motivated by money it made sense - the more meets the more prize money for wins and world record.
This is also his last season at the top.

Centrowitz is five years older. I'm not sure that recovery from 4x402.25 meters (0 rest) at 56.5 pace is on par with 2x2,400m workouts consecutive weeks out before Rio. Time will tell.
Do you think he's doing this to cement his legacy? He's been done well on the global stage but never run a truly great time, and let's face it, he got a lot of luck in Rio. He's never won a really fast race. It feels like if he could lay down the AR in the mile, it could help get rid of that doubt that he's just a guy with a good kick who needs others to screw up if he's going to win

The 'super spikes' have existed for over a year now, the 1500 and 800 world/American records haven't even been scared of the new shoes. They don't make you significantly faster to where this wouldn't be impressive just because of 'super shoes'. If Centro runs 3:48 or better it proves he is a legitimate contender at the olympics. At least a podium contender.

If he misses that by 40-50 meters just before defending his Olympic title, it'll be embarrassing and show the world he'll be lucky to even make the final in Tokyo. I'm rooting for him to hit 3:48. In the end of the day, would it matter to him what people think of him? None of those people will be in the stands in Tokyo booing or jeering him if he's unsuccessful in his AR pursuit.
He doesn't get ten days recovery after the race; he gets ten days development from the race.
He can't wait until after the Games because he always runs poorly after world championships or Olympics--celebrating and stopping running after tapering. An American record in the mile would cement his legacy among American milers.

Did we ever hear what happened in his mile time trial at altitude? I looked but found nothing.
