2013 College Coaching Positions Open(ing)

With the retirement of Ron Allice at USC, the entire USC coaching staff got fired, except for the throws coach, Dan Lange. Wow, this is a shocker. The Trojans finished 2nd in the Pac-12, and 5th in the NCAA Championships, and they let everyone go but Lange.

You know, you can both be right. It is possible for a coach to both recruit well and teach well, with good ethics. And yes, such coaches have been at Illinois.

Is anyone aware of any assistant coaching positions or graduate assistantships with the horizontal jumps?? Thanks in advance for replies!

Nonsense. Don't coach. College coaching is recruiting as much as "coaching." Either admit it or exile yourself. Having a good athlete means you recruited good talent. The people with the best performances on their team did the job of finding them, signing them, and keeping them eligible

I enjoy sidebars and deviations from the topic at hand as much as the next guy, but COME ON PEOPLE. Enough about ethics in coaching (which is no worse or better than any other profession). This sounds like it's coming from someone fresh out of undergrad. Please don't speak on this if you're in your 20's, btw, as some more life experience will no doubt expose you to all kinds of hypocrisy, and illumination to situational ethics, and gray area that exists all around you.

And enough on coaching is all recruiting or all development. The best coaches do both, but coaches are human and go through cycles of being motivated and unmotivated along with years they can devote more or less time to their profession based on any number of circumstances in their life. Some coaches try to recruit and develop a bunch of kids so they are in position to win conference team titles in track & field. Some coaches try "to win" with just a handful so they can qualify individuals for NCAAs. Some coaches focus on just one event group and while others have proven they can lead a balanced attack with success across all event groups and both genders. Situations vary as much as the people who are put in charge to lead those situations.

To your point, some are Machiavellian or appear cunning while others are "more or less ethical" and straightforward in all their dealings with people. Most coaches, I have found, have good hearts and are in the profession because they care about others and helping young people make their dreams come true. Occasionally, some of these same people, get sidetracked but that's life and there is much reward for those who are open to learning from past mistakes.

You are probably proud of your education, Mr. or Miss Italiac, and I'll excuse you for a lack of humility as that is one of the most difficult traits to authentically radiate from your soul. Now can we get back to observing the coaching carousel.

Every year this thread comes up and every year people rush to be the one to break the news about a coach leaving for a new school. Do you people ever stop for a second and think about those directly involved? Athletes are losing their coaches and mentors. Sometimes they find that out from a post on letsrun. These kids deserve to hear it from their coach and not some random person online. It is very hard and very emotional for these kids and you all disregard that for your own selfish rumor mongering. It's a shame.

Cry me a river. This forum is a great source of information. If these kids are hearing about their coach leaving on let's run, the question begs then, why is there Coach waiting so long to tell them? If multiple sources are claiming that a coach is heading to a particular school many times it is true. These things do not happen just out of thin air.

It's fine if you want to be a prick about it and I expected somebody to be. Every situation is different and people sometimes get info from sources other than the coach and do so before said coach has the time to tell the team (hard to get them all during the summer). My point still stands and I think the athletes deserve better. You can make whatever argument you want about the loyalty etc of the coach but I'm thinking of the kids on the team.

Not in my 20's, a successful recruiter an developer, 25 years in the business of college coaching. I was making an generalize observation. I use a fairly common term that I was accuse of "making up."

I believe that most coaches an most people believe they are good intentioned but in reality, no ones ethics, including my own, stand up to close scrutiny an that make everyone decidedly uncomfortable.

My comment was not as much about the coaches as it was about the people making the observations.

I don't believe you. I think you are more concerned about yourself or the coach. The kids are going to either be disappointed or happy regardless of when or how they hear their coach is leaving. The real issue is the coach not being upfront with his team. I don't think you are looking out for the athletes. You are no martyr.

I heard the coach from Zap Fitness is headed to UCONN. Any truth to this?

Pete Rea? He is a UConn grad. But I thought they needed a sprints/jumps type coach...not a distance coach?

What's the latest on Oklahoma? have they interviewed anyone yet?

Ran into former distancerunner today who said Sudbury will be distance coach and they will bring a sprint focused new coach. Also said, key runner will transfer with coach to Iowa St.

Nothing to add except I am post #1000 (unless someone beat me to it).
