While the Johnnies had a lot of dudes go sub 15 at Platteville last year, Kipnick’s squad this year probably has the record. Maybe the Oles or Carleton in the 2012-15 era.

A lot to unpack here. Yes the Oles have the most under 15 this year, but many are graduating. I’m not certain DuVivier plans to stay and I’ve heard Seppanen misses the chillness of the Luther staff, but a new coach may have changed his mind. Unfortunately for the competitiveness of the MIAc, the much more heralded recruits of Mac and Carleton haven’t made the leap I expected after a stellar Indoor. We can always count on the Johnnies to develop over their time on that rock farm of a campus, so maybe they will rise to the occasion next year.
I think many of us felt the Oles had underperformed last Fall and Indoor and getting a coach that had the type of success Kipnick enjoyed with the 800 men and women at St. Olaf is the perfect recalibration. It’s no secret Phil’s and Power’s teams were their best when they had great assistants. Hopefully Kipnick can bring someone in compliment his methods, because what he has already changed is hitting the mark.
And I believe the MIAC record for sub 15 is six.
If you look back at the Olaf 2025 XC season, you see that the soph/jr contingent of the team underperformed. They definitely need to pick up some slack to solidify the team's hold on the MIAC. You have to give Power credit for his 2025 recruitment class. They are overdelivering in terms of the team and their lack of experience. DuVivier's time in the 5k last night is the 23rd fastest time in the nation for D3 1st yr men. Hitchcock and Guasco are 96 and 99. Recruiting 3 of the top 100 is pretty darn good. Looking at the top 100, St. Olaf is one of the few schools to have 3 runners in the top 100.

If you cross reference this list with the 2025 XC national championship finishes you get:
1 UW-La Crosse - 4 (Freshmen in the top 100 for 5K)
2 SUNY Geneseo - 1
3 Wartburg - 5
4 NYU - 4
5 RPI - 2
6 Johns Hopkin - 4
7 Tufts - 3
8 Pomona-Pitzer - 2
9 MIT - 2
10 North Central (Ill.) - 2
11 U. of Chicago - 2
12 St. Olaf - 3
13 Williams - 3
14 Washington U. - 6
St. Olaf has more freshmen runners in the top 100 for 5k than 6 teams that finished ahead of it at the 2025 XC championship. A great recruitment coup for the first year class.
Goddard must be just outside the top 100, finishing just two second back of Guasco. Posts earlier in the thread mentioned he was very excited about this class and his freshman rarely impactful as shown by a freshman record of 14:52. So either we’ll see the same traditional sophomore jump or maybe Kipnick has unlocked it already. Either way this builds plenty of depth to be competitive at the top of the conference. They need a front runner to emerge to be competitive enough to qualify out of the brutal North Region. Maybe that will be Seppanen or DuVivier or Hitchcock. Or maybe one of the two returners from their national squad that certainly underperformed.
If anything, this shows how easy of a coaching job St. Olaf is. A poorly trained monkey could get most of the these guys sub 15.

This is east to research. The Oles had several years with 6-8 between Indoor and Outdoor since 2023. And that’s with some guys racing the distance that ran under 25:30 in XC but instead focused on shorter events in track. How many does Kipnick have?
2026 - 11 MIAC athletes under 15:00. 7 Oles, 2 Macalester.
2025 - 13 MIAC under 15:00. St. John's 3, Mac 2, St. Olaf 7.
2024 - 14 MIAC under 15:00. 2 Mac/Carleton, 7 Oles.
2023 - 15 MIAC under 15:00. 3 Carls, 6 Oles.
Just for comparison and a look at how things have changed. (Outdoor only) -
2022 - 7 total
2021 - 8 total (3 Carls, even a Hamline guy)
2020 -
2018 - 2, both Carls
2017 -3 All Northfielders
2016 - 7 - even a Saint Mary's guy and two Johnnies
2015 - 2, both Carls
2014 - Only 1. WIntheiser, pre-super shoes (the actual Ole record holder) at 14:14
2013 - 1 the fastest Augsburger not named Mo.
2012 - 4, with 3 being from Hamline, including Devon at 14:12.
I'll add that it's impressive Kipnick has gotten the team to this point so quickly with all 7 of his sub 15 men PR'ing and several very close to being sub 15 in Bjork and a couple others within reach in Pattie and McCabe. For all things considered, he's already surpassed Power with far less drama in his first few moths.
But don't look at TFRRS for this info, because FastFinish Results hasn't bothered to put it up yet. I've heard the women's coach put her foot down when Power left and they will not be using them for the MIAC championship, which is the best news since Power was encouraged to depart.

Are they not using them for the multis as we speak? Or are you saying they won't use them next weekend?
"A poorly trained monkey could get most of the these guys sub 15." So, you actually agree that Power did a good job recruiting talented runners. And he was smart enough to create a culture that allowed them to reach their potential. Seems like what would want from a coach.
Why aren't you certain that Du Vivier will return? What makes you think differently?
He doesn’t think it’s necessary to do double threshold and Kipnick is requiring all his athletes that don’t live at altitude to do it.

Some big performances yesterday -
Mya Slavin ranks 13th in the country in the 800 and Cole is now 16th in the 1500! And a huge run from pole vaulter Stephen Feig of Bethel in 22.00! Bailey Evans continues the Johnnies dominance of the multi, qualifying for Nationals. And congrats to former distance runner Reece Anderson from Carleton on scoring 5th despite not getting a mark in long jump.
