Well that didn't work.

I was hoping Tuesday 5/5 would break the pattern of high numbers of daily deaths on Tuesdays, but instead this Tuesday was just as bad as previous Tuesdays, so there is no change in 7 day numbers.

Same old thing:

World, daily change in deaths, 7 day average: +1% per day

US, ditto: +4% per day

Those are numbers broadly similar to what we've seen for several days.

The three day numbers are quite bad, but that's just the weekly cycle so I'll probably stop reporting them.

The US hit a new high 5/5 of having 41% of the world's deaths on one day.

No change in the standings for Sweden or the US. 10th worst and 14th worst. Including minor nation.

Only negative signs I see are for Spain - that country has had a negative 2% average change in daily deaths over the past 7 days.

So the current re-election strategy is to pivot away from the virus and scream about something else. Throw the magas some raw meat.

Maybe you can understand it this way, agip.

Hotspot = a place where idiots are governing. The numbers may not improve until we deal with the source of the problem.

only if the deaths are predominantly white people in red states, and that may not happen

It would only seem obviously untrue if you think short-term. We don’t have that luxury anymore. Places that made mistakes early on were able to adjust with good leadership. In USA the problem just migrates to another “hotspot/outlier”.

Even you must have noticed that the pandemic isn’t intractable, it’s merely opportunistic (admittedly with a wide range of opportunities, but that’s evolution).

Well I guess Texas is led by complete geniuses and NY is led by absolute morons.

Texas deaths per million: 34

NY deaths per million: 1,285

Do you really think that's going to even out?

Hard to say, in terms of deaths. But consider how much better positioned New York is going forward. I think New York wins by miles ultimately.

There is always an element of randomness that decides where a large outbreak will occur. An infected person has to be in the right place at the right time. He infects several others who in turn are in a position to infect several others, etc.

Of course, the odds of creating a hotspot increase in a place like a meat packing plant. But because it is still a somewhat random process, not all meat packing plants get hit.

The same thing is true on a macro level. Some entire states will get hit hard and some won't. Policy can change the odds, but there will still be an element of randomness.
