Also, Eddy would probably not want to post anymore because his coach would see it and put the kibosh on that.

Some will say it would be good for the coach to see this and get a clue, but the truth is that seeing so much criticism would not solve the problem. Just seeing that many people think your plan stinks usually just makes a clueless person more determined to prove something. In this case he will try to prove that his methods work.

I am amazed that any school in California (where MD runners grow on trees) would put so little effort into finding a good coach. I don't want to throw those girls in the pictures under the bus (they have nothing to do with this) but this guys coaching and training methods aren't setting the world on fire for them either (2:26 and 2:29 for 800m) ... oh well, at least they're hot.

I am confused by pointing for 4:44 when you have run 4:38 in training. Unless NAU is at 8500' elev. (I know it is not) you should be really testing yourself at a higher level. I mean shit, you've been testing yourself nearly every day in training and you are looking to run 3:59/4:18y during this season you should probably start at 4:32y (68 a lap ~ 4:15 for 1500) and work down to 64 a lap.

Usually people don't improve 20 seconds over a season (4:38 to 4:18), unless they are on a heavily periodized program of lots of volume over the winter (which you are not).

Aim higher. That is all I can say. 4:45 is good ... when you are a sophomore in HS.

I ran 4:50 last year on really low mileage. and i wanna run 4:30. Thats 20 sec. I think i can improve that much in one season.

Eddylee... good job on your mile! Especially this early in the season. Rest when your body tells you and run like the wind when you have it. We're all hoping this is your year. Regarding your comment, 4:43 is my comeback PR. I ran a 4:30ish indoor mile in 1992 at a meet in Jonesboro, AR. However, I intend to run much faster as a 37 year old. I want to see what's possible.

Jonesy... with your 1200m training times in the 3:50 range, you ought to be cranking a mile race time of 4:25 or less. I'm looking forward to learning how you'll race. My only suggestion in your upcoming mile race would be to lock on to someone ahead of you and pass them... then hit the next guy.... pass him... By lap 6 you ought to be balls out. Draw from your aerobic base... you shouldn't be too tired. 90+ miles per week is only a dream for me and I'm lucky if I hit 67. Your wheels should start coming off as you head to the finish line... but you'll be laying it all down and racing against somebody or winning.

Solo Joe... Are you in HS or college or just a JoeSixPack runner like Jonesy and I? Maybe I'll see you at CMSU or MU for an Indoor Open. Lots of good meets coming up. Heading to Iowa State Open this Sat. Going to double doing the mile then the 800m. This meet is stacked. Chose to do the 800m to relearn what it feels like to spin the wheels at a much faster rate. Next meet after that is at Central Missouri State U. 2/7.

I wish I could get in some of those races, but I am not in the area at the moment. I hope to race 2 weeks from this weekend. Probably an 800m.

It was nice meeting you, and racing against you last week. The 160 yard track was not as easy as it looked. Hey keep your miles up, and train (hard) this season. I am looking for a sub 4:20 mile, at your meet on Feb 21. Maybe, it will help you with your goal this year. Radical Ron, are you running the Master Indoor National this year. I ran a 1:56.1 800, and a 4:21, mile their two years ago, it is a fast track.

doubled in 4:48.67 mile and 9:32.42 3k (FAT), about two hours between. the mile was bad, as I need some, any, race pace work. went out in 68, 2:22. I felt lousy but I worked hard and just didn't have the race-specific training.

my hamstrings were fine in the races. they weren't helped by my day off yesterday, but I found some very good stretches on google today, which seem to have solved the problem.

The 3k was better. I settled just behind a couple guys hitting 30s for 160m laps. I was 5:04 at the 1600m. They alternated the lead and then a fourth guy came up and took the lead with about 4-5 laps to go. I was gapped a bit at this point but was running very easy the whole way. I probably should have had some courage and got out in front and pushed the pace with 5-7 laps to go. With a lap to go, I finally picked it up, got one guy on the backstretch, passed the second guy on the last turn and then dialed it up very nicely to haul down the first place guy on the homestretch and win by a second. While the mile was 8 seconds off my pr, I ran 9:33i for 3k in college in 1989, and ran 9:32.45, 9:32.5, and 9:32.9 last year. Considering that my first real speedwork was on Tuesday and shouldn't have kicked in yet, that I've done maybe two real tempos in the past two months, and that most of my running for six weeks has been super slow snow running, this seems somewhat promising. 3k pace feels very comfortable and I think that I can finally get a sizable pr if I get another race indoors. I felt quite fresh in running 4M c/d immediately after at probably sub 7 pace. 14.5M for the day.

when I say that I won, I meant that I won the slow heat, obviously.

it's particularly difficult to run a fast 800 indoors, because of the tight turns, which makes boingo's race particularly good, even if that was probably on the banks of the armory.

Latest Wildman-report.

Race at Iowa State today on their 300m track. Nice place. Never been there before. Doubled in the mile and 800m. Happy to report a small drop. Ran 4:40.83. I thought I could run 4:39 and found myself in a heat where most of the guys were seeded right at 4:30. Very competitive. I went out with the pack and tried to hang on. Came through in 2:15 at the half way point and around mid-late 4th lap I tied up and the wheels started coming off. I'm glad I went out fast though. I now know what I have to do to get into the 4:30s. A couple of hours later I ran a 2:08 800m. Planning to race in two weeks on a 200m track.

Jonesy... It's early in the season and like you said... with some speedwork, you should be able to bring your times down considerably. You have an awesome base from which to draw from. Regardless, great job. I'm impressed.

JoeC... Not sure if I'll run Masters in the mile at Nationals. If I was closer to Maryland, I would probably do it.

Solo Joe.. Don't beat yourself up too much. You had a rough week. Looking forward to hearing how you do in the next race.

First mile of the year yesterday - not a PR (ending my hopes of PRing every time I race this season) but very close.

Split 64 65 67 65 for a 4:22.64. The wheels never really came off - I just never gunned it hard enough. First race of the season so I'm not going to get too down on myself but I know I could have done better (obviously, looking at the third quarter).

Good double, Ron. Going out that hard is audacious and commendable - sometimes you can hang on, which is valuable to learn.

Jonesy - I definitely agree about the race-specific work. Do you just not have access to any facilities right now or just haven't felt like doing it? I realize I'm coming from much more speed-oriented training, but being able to run 9:50 or so for 3k usually means I can run right around 4:40 for the mile.

I think you're going to have a hard time PRing in these shorter distances by much if you don't focus on them. I think it'd be smart to choose whether you want to make this year a short distance year or a 10k-marathon year - otherwise, I worry that you'll hammer out your 90 mile weeks only to find very small PRs in every event because you haven't been specific enough.

nonetheless, good job on the win!

good job to you too, eddy. have you had any luck with getting some more intelligent workouts from your coach?

ps. the 800 was on a banked track - harvard's. i'm working / running around the boston area now - may be a while before i see the inside of the armory again.

I should amend my above statement - first mile race of the season. The mile / 1500 takes a few races before I feel comfortable with it again.

Congrats on your first mile race, with awesome splits, of the season. The workouts have changed this year. We are going doubles 4x/week, and every morning run is a 4-7mile run. The past 2 weeks I was able to get in some extra mileage on the weekends because of our weird racing schedule. We had last Saturday and Sunday to ourselves to get ready for Monday's race so I just ran an 8miler on Saturday and a 6miler on Sunday with some strides. Since we raced Friday, I was able to get in 8 yesterday, and I will probably get in 6-8 today as well.

I'm really confident that things are going to go very well this year. I have 10x more endurance this time of the year than last season, and I am not over-doing my workouts, a problem I had last season.

Very nice 3k after the mile. I ran a similar time this past Friday up in Flagstaff.

According to the heat sheets, I had 2 NAU guys at 915 and one NAU guy at 930. I did not want to run a 3k by myself so I decided to hang with them as long as I could. I did a 2mile w/u and felt solid...I thought I was going to pull something out of my ass...

We came through the first 1500 at 440 and mile 5:00. The pace felt good, but my breathing was a little out of control...its bad when you only hear your breathing in the pack hahaha

Anyways, I fell apart around the 7th lap(300m track) and struggled to finish. I ran a 952, and NCAA gives you a 20second conversion to sea level. Awesome experience to run with some of those NAU guys, nonetheless. Like you, I felt great after the race and did a 3mile c/d.

I'm looking forward to seeing some of your race-specific workouts.

I broke 4 for the 15 yesterday. I did a workout consisting of 2minute rest off 62 second 400s times 10. Did this workout show potential to break 4? How fast can I run a 15 by the end of the season? BTW, I'm not a fan of Eddy Lee and don't think the punk will break 4....ever.

I have no idea when my first xc race is. Our school does not have a mens team so I am just going to find a few races in socal to do. I am thinking about running an 8k late October. Other than that, I have a half marathon planned on Oct. 5 or 6th in San Jose.

Reading over everyone's posts, it seems to be that everyone is moving in the right direction. Good to see improvements across the board this past weekend.

Today I did 3x(300m, 30 sec rest, 200m) with 6 minutes between sets. I hit 40, 27; 42, 29; 44, 30. I was supposed to do a 4th set, but I was curled up on the infield in a heap of lactic acid and vomit. I've been battling a cold lately but I really don't think it is affecting my training this much. Don't know what/if I will race in a week and a half.
