Ok enough digression, i generally use Phase instead of mesocycle so i guess i'm mixing cultures, but mesocycle appears often enough in the literature instead of Phase. Although on occasion i do see mesocycle placed in between micro and macro, and maybe that is just someone doing what you did and making what he thinks is a correction.
Meso does means middle, or intermediate. It's a LABEL, and the LABEL is applied to certain things because of their POSITION: mesocycle, mesomorph, mezzanine, mezzo soprano, etc. You can talk about the distinct qualites of these items all you want, but the reason why they got the label is because of where they sit on a superficial, observational level.
I looked up "meso" before my earlier post, no harm in double-checking. I looked up "mesocycle" too. And I just looked it up AGAIN in two more sources, after your reply.
