In 2019 Carleton won MIAC, St. Thomas was 2nd, and Olaf was 3rd in Phil's last season coaching. All 3 then went to nationals - Carleton 11th, Olaf 25th, St. Thomas 28th. Gustavus and St. John's were 4th and 6th, and their 5th guys ran upwards of a full minute faster than they did 6 years later last fall. (Hamline was 5th, that was like they basically won it. The opps got Brodeyed)
Sub 27 landed you 32nd this year, and 58th in 2019. Why is everyone else so washed now?
I'd say the 800 is the best it has ever been and the mile has some dogs too and that's without Iggy and The Future who both ran 3:48 last year.
Ihrke’s mark was impressive, but Turlington ran the second fastest 5000m in Indoor MIAC history and ranks top ten in the country in a NCAA event. Chunko’s reputation again gets in the way of the his athletes receiving honors.
I saw the Gustavus coaching staff everywhere this Spring. They are really trying to build something there.
All that work is paying off. Gusties signed another big time commit from Wayzata. I really feel like the tides are shifting in the MIAC with Gustavus bringing in such a stellar class, Scholastica signing some good guys, and don’t get me started on how good the Cobber women will be the next few years! All these coaches are recruiting in state, which seems to be a contrasting strategy compared to our Northfield teams.
This is great for the MIAC. We seriously need to raise the competitiveness without seeing our nationals teams drop. Yes, it is harder to qualify from the North Region than the old Central Region, but we should always be a two bid team.
But it is also safe to say that the all-Minnesota scoring five of Turlington, Gael, Bjork, Doran, and Fiaturolo still win the MIAC.
Oldheads know that the best distance coach in the MIAC was actually Phil's assistant Griff. Sounds like that's also the case with the Ole 800 coach. Let's give credit where credit is due for his work in recruiting and developing this group. Looks they could have an all Minnesota 4 x 800 run close to 7:30!
While Gustavus and surprisingly St. Scholastic seem to be bringing in great classes, crickets on the Ole recruiting class. That can’t be good for the Oles faithful. The alumni barely tolerate his shenanigans now. They will not if the team drops as expected.
We know the strength coach is keeping a close watch over Power’s conduct and spending. A poor recruiting class may spell the end for his time with the Oles. Seeing the women’s coach win the a MIAC championship next week in only her third year won’t help his case.
Parents took me dinner this weekend we were near Chunko’s boss and wife. wouldn’t have known other than his jacket. Pretty hilarious convo to ease drop on tho. He was very unhappy at the size of the meets they host and the amount of time they take. He complained that Chunko is a hard ass about everything. Sounds like he’s expecting some changes soon. Maybe truth to the rumors?
If he didn’t like that meet, he’s going to hate watching Chunko stupidly stack a 3K the week before conference after 10:00 pm. Maybe show him this thread so he knows how many other people are also fed up with Chunko.
Don't tell me Chunko develops talent when has 1:54 HS 800m guys barely cracking 2:30. Or like we said with Seppannen. He's just managing already talented runners. Look at other coaches who develop their talent.
I think we need to give Calvin credit for both the recruiting he's doing, but also the improvement his young group is showing this year. And the Ole Chunko wouldn't let run is running faster than several of his athletes. Whoever coaches Saint Mary's should get some attention too for their really fast woman and how Fitzgerald has become a viable conference scorer in two events.
Can you name any alumni that have actually been vocal?
Only one alumni showing up for their alumni race last night says if all.
I think it’s weird that Power barely coaches at meets. He seemed to spend more time making his athletes move stuff as soon as events ended and yelling about hurdle setup. Why are his meets so long?

You can talk all you want about the Oles, but the job Schofer, a Carleton grad, has done with Ihrke is so impressive. They should throw him the 3K & 5K just to take those Mac records too. Schofer’s young group is phenomenal.
Evidently he’s upset Power used school funds to buy Cullen Moore bicarb. The administration feels using cheater powder goes against the Lutheran values of the institution. just add that to his list of transgressions. And that stuff is expensive, so he used a with around to avoid the expense report. He’s not the smoothest character, so he was recently caught by the assistant AD. I’d be surprised to see him at Carleton next week and some of his top runners may not compete either.

I wonder if Gustavus men’s XC will ever win a MIAC title. The best they’ve done in MIAC is 2nd I believe.

Thank you for spamming this thread with Power fetish fan fiction as well. I know Power was more important than boring grass distance runners, but his aura transcends all of track and field. I can not orgasm until I’ve read more mundane details about his imagined or true trivial transgressions. Someone tell me about how he put a pizza box in paper recycling instead of organic seven though the cardboard has pizza oil making it unsuitable for paper recycling and how this offend Protestant sensibilities!
Man do I envy all of you who can just follow Power around all day and immediately report back to these threads on everything he does. If only we could cut out all the stupid track talk so I don’t have to scroll through that nonsense for my power content.
How will Turlington run without a pacer? He's always had Mo in XC or someone Power hired in Track. Will he be able to handle doing the work on his own? Will we see Roy have a late senior surge for the title? Or will a dark horse like Goss or Edwards sit in the pack and close hard late?
The Scholastica class might be their best ever and is the best in the MIAC right now. Just check their IG to see the aces they are bringing in . It will take a couple years, but they are on the rise and I predict they win a MIAC championship before Carleton, Gustavus, or Macalester.
Scholastica seems to have a solid mid-distance freshman too. He wasn't super impactful in the Fall, but I'd guess it takes time to adjust to their double threshold.
How big of a role does Calvin have in recruiting and day to day coaching. Isn't their head coach at the Olympics? Remember, he's the last coach not from Northfield to win Coach of the Year in a long, long time. And also the only not winning coach to win in decades, but we won't revisit how much other coaches dislike Power and abandoned tradition to do that.
