According to this article, he turned 14 years old on November 19, 2019. This indicates his birthday is November 19, 2005. Which is strange because most '05 kids graduated in 2023 or 2024.
It would make sense for him to have graduated in 2024 since he has a late birthday, but he hasn't. He graduates this spring, in 2025, the same year he turns 20... which is very, very old. He should've graduated last spring
Even more confusing, is the fact that the article states he was in eighth grade as of Fall 2019 (and turned 14 at the same time, which is a normal aged 8th grader.)
So if he was in 8th grade for the 2019-2020 school year (when c/o '24 was in that grade), how the hell is he still in high school??
Man, if he really was held back a year, I don’t think he would be eligible to compete in HS sports this year.
And he’s turning 19 in 4 days. Crazy.
well, he for sure satisfied this part - “No student, whose 19th birthday is attained prior to June 15, shall participate or practice on any team in the following school year. A student, whose 19th birthday is on or before June 14, is ineligible.”

If you look at athletic.net, you’ll see his years in school for both middle school and high school. He was in 8th grade for 2019-2020 school year. Covid started in 2020. It looks like maybe he delayed going to high school in the fall of 2020 and waited until fall 2021. This means his 4 years of California high school eligibility didn’t begin until fall 2021.
He just ran sac Joaquin section championships today, 15:10.9
willow hills is a tough cross country course, not a flat golf course tour, the course record is 15:03 by German Fernandez
holmans time ties him for 3rd all time, only behind Fernandez, Luis Grijalva, and Michael vernau.
Yeah, Willow Hills is no joke, I raced it several times throughout HS. Giant dirt hills and nasty sharp turns. No surprise to me that German holds the record.
For those speculating about him "delaying the start of highschool" I really don't know how that is even possible, especially in California. Perhaps he was homeschooled, but if he was, he would've graduated by now.
There's no way he just sat out an entire year after finishing middle school. The only logical explanation is that the article is wrong and falsified his age by one year. His birthday is 99% 11/19/2006.

What does it say on his athletic.net profile regarding what years and grades he ran?

Weirdly enough, Athletic.net says he's 19, but I don't really trust that site for ages because they're wrong 99% of the time (they got my own age wrong once)

You can see when he was at the top of his 11/12 age group for USATF in 2017 on athletic.net. USATF has very stringent birth certificate requirements and verification so while not 100% unprobable I think it is probably highly unlikely the article screwed up his dob especially after reading the article again from when the record was set.

If he ever ran aau or usatf you could figure it out. They are strictly age verified, the age the kid turns in that calendar year- none of this "grade" nonsense.

So 12 in 2017 = 19 in 2024.
Or he was 11 in 2017. Which is how old he'd be if he was born in 2006
Also, the date of the article and literally the date this thread was created was December 2019. The title lists him to be 13 years old. He turned 13 a month prior, in November of that year
One section of the article states,
Holman turned 14 on November 19 and followed up his 5K record by taking second at the USATF National Championships Cross Country race in Wisconsin for his age group last weekend.
That has to be the mistake. The article must've meant "turned 13" not 14. It would literally defeat the entire premise of the article if he had actually turned 14 years old.
With that being said, Broen was born on November 19, 2006 and turns 18 tomorrow.
Not how it works because you can see he ran 11/12 the year before as well in USATF xc championships in 2016. USATF does not allow you to run outside your birth year category.

That's not how I read the article. It says he broke the age 13 record in a race on Nov. 9, then turned 14 on Nov 19, and ran the USATF XC race.

Damn... I guess I missed that. Alright, I'm officially stumped.
It literally makes no sense like, how was he born in 2005, in the 8th grade in 2019-2020 and is STILL in high school?? At the very least, he would've graduated spring 2024. Makes zero sense. It doesn't add up
There's no way CIF would permit a 19-going-on-20 year old to compete in any sports at this margin. He turns 20 the same year he graduates HIGH school. That's insane
I was born in 2005 and I graduated in 2023. He is hardly younger than I am.
