On December 14 Sage Canaday raced and won a 10k in 32:36. Can he run a 2:19 marathon in Houston?

Hardcore juicers like Farah or Hassan would kill for doping that's legal, everywhere available and very cheap.

But apparently vegan clicks are more important than athletic performance. Just don't mention his gigantic carbon footprint.

The only solution for Sage is to get a pair of VaporFly or AlphaFly. And also to eat some real meat to boost recovery and blood cell regeneration. That should easily let him OTQ

Alright so I disagree with just about all of this. I didn't think the Japanese trials were good for the sport. I think the buzz for the Trials in a couple months would be worse off if there were only 20 entrants combined.

Also Sage literally said he ran the 10k at marathon pace. That's a fine workout. His HR was in the 160s. That seems fine to me.

Training talk: What should he be doing?

He shouldn't be doing any more hard stuff now that he's 5 weeks out right? He should be letting his legs recover. Things like hills, sprints, strength traing, and long intervals above race pace. The hay is already in the barn for things like that. Time to recover.

Should he be focusing on:

-easy miles, keeping that easy volume up. Is he the type to lose fitness quick if he tapers too early?

-Daniel's style economy reps with 3+ mins rest.

-strides.

-1 milers @ goal pace here and there in long runs and after a tempo.

-Also he should definitely eat more grains and tubers. I'm talking mash and rice son. ?

I think 5 weeks out you still are in the thick of it. You want your longest run in the build 4 or 5 weeks out. Some sort of big simulator 3 weeks out. 2 x 5 or 6 miles 2 weeks out. Then I think you back off and start to get sharp. Still have plenty of time to add to the fitness.

Why not talk about Phil and Coach JS coaching him? Did you notice JS coached him to a new PB at 10 miles after ten years delay?? He will keep on coach Phil to a sub 2:19 within a year from now.No coach can help Sage run sub 2:19 in Houston with that level he has now. But of course if Sage hire JS to coach him he will also run a sub 2:19 next season if he wants it.

Difficult professionally for Sage to both sell coaching services online and pay for (or receive for free) coaching services for himself.

If that heartrate is correct its not at marathon heartrate but closer to 1 hour race pace since his max hr is around 180. But heartrate isn't reliable in races so

Hell, as someone pointed out, Ragen Chastain has a "career" waddling marathons. The 430miler had a "career" as well at about the same level as me and sundry other folks on here.

It wasn't potatoes (never liked them much), it was fruit, veggies, whole grains and soy. I found out that it is hard to run to your potential with a ferritin level of 7 and your guts are blowing out your rear due to lectins, phytates, c.diff, oalates, etc..

Ragen Chastain has a world record in the marathon, Sage hasn't.

Ragen is not only a professional athlete in running, she is also an elite IRONMAN triathlete.

I would rate Ragen's pro career higher than Sage's career.

What's the difference? She eats meat, a lot of it, like huge amounts of meat. She once ordered for $48 hotdogs:

I think it's just one person who is oddly offended by this, and I hope it's his girlfriend being overly sensitive and protective which is somewhat forgivable, but still misguided. A discussion about if Sage can manage to qualify is NOT ripping him to shreds. The guy had a crap time and he specifically said that he had crap time. Are we not allowed to discuss the ramifications of this with his upcoming marathon? Don't be ridiculous.

His diet gets ripped to shreds, but if he doesn't want to get ripped to shreds about his diet he should stop talking about it. How would anyone know he was mostly Vegan if he didn't endlessly talk about it?

I'm sorry Sage is upset about his performance, but, people here are also discussing what he needs to do to turn it around and still qualify. Maybe he'll get some good advice he can use. You need to think positive for the guy and stop seeing everything as negative.
