Satriani is an excellent technical player but his music lacks any bit of soul and his shows are akin to extended masturbation sessions. I'm not sure why guys like him and Vai get so much love. It is difficult, if not impossible, to quantify a single solo as 'the best'. But, for me and many others, it is about the passion/feeling/emotion/etc of the moment. This is likely cliche, but SRV fit this as well as any guitarist I've seen/listened to. It was like he was trying to open a portal to another dimension... trying to find that note bend that collides in the moment and blows a hole in time. Pure emotion.

This album is unreal. I got to see McLaughlin play live with Shatki and in a combo with Dennis Chambers and Joey DeFrancesco. Anyone who is into the guitar needs to fill their iphones with the legends of the jazz fusion era and get to a live show to see these guys while they still have it. Sadly, Paco passed away a few years ago. But McLaughlin and Di Meola are still cranking it out.

This solo by Elliott Randall on Reelin in the Years is regarded by Jimmy Page as one of the best ever. I agree.

In Mr. Randall's own words, taken from a Guitarist Magazine interview from July 2012: “When I moved to LA, the timing was really quite appropriate for Steely Dan’s first recording,” Elliott recalls. “So I was asked to come in. Apparently, Reelin’ in the Years was proving to be a problem for them because – as good as Jeff and Denny were – whatever they were doing wasn’t making Donald and Walter feel as though they had the appropriate guitar intro, solos and outro. So they called me in and asked if I would be interested in playing on it.”

Fresh to the session, Elliott cut what is arguably his most famous solo in a matter of minutes.

“They played the song for me once – the changes are not very complex. Then we took two passes. The first pass, which some of us to this day say was better, wasn’t recorded. It was a run-through and we all went, Whoah! Then we looked at the assistant engineer who had turned ghostly white, and he said, ‘Oh, sorry, I didn’t press the button’. So my second pass was what you hear on the record – it was completely unedited. It was just from top-to-bottom all the way through. And it worked – we all just laughed afterwards.”

YUP. The phrasing and progression of Jimmy Page's Stairway to Heaven make it to the top of almost everyone's list. Without it, the song sucked.

But the back-story makes it even better The solo was recorded on the so-called Dragon Telecaster, a 1959 Tele given to him when Jeff Beck departed from the Yardbirds. The solo was the third of three extemporaneous takes in the studio, all different. They chose the right one.

Rolling Stone magazine asked Jimmy Page how much of the guitar solo was composed before he recorded it. He replied: "It wasn't structured at all [laughs]. I had a start. I knew where and how I was going to begin. And I just did it. There was an amplifier [in the studio] that I was trying out. It sounded good, so I thought, "OK, take a deep breath, and play." I did three takes and chose one of them. They were all different. The solo sounds constructed - and it is, sort of, but purely of the moment. For me, a solo is something where you just fly, but within the context of the song."

TinaS has covered many of the most popular guitar solos in the world, including some of the ones mentioned in this topic, such as Eruption and Comfortably Numb, but with the understanding that music is inherently subjective, this is the best guitar solo she has covered and "most likely" the best guitar solo in the world.

Metallica is awesome, but not really known for guitar solos. Not to take anything away from their awesomeness, but the solos in that video are pretty generic.
