East African (and North African to an extent) have certain genetic advantages for distance running, END OF STORY. Some of these advantages have already been proven scientifically, such as-
1) the study trackhead posted where Ethiopian highlanders have a super-human ability to extract O2 from the air, and have the same level of blood oxygenation at 10,000 feet as westerners do at sea level! And..
2) a study that showed that people whose ancestors come from warmer climates have mitonchondrial DNA that is much more efficient at producing energy than people whose ancestors come from cold climates.
I've wondered for years if there is concrete genetic evidence and wonder if you can direct me to the studies you refer.
The former would suggest either superior or a greater number of oxygen-binding proteins to be found in only East Africans and the later would suggest that the mtDNA (which is interestingly maternal in nature) carried by East Africans is found only in people of that ancestral lineage.
I have seen studies suggesting that blacks have a greater bone mineral density and body protein content than do whites, resulting in a greater fat-free body density.
Additionally, there are racial differences in the distribution of subcutaneous fat and the length of the limbs relative to the trunk. My understanding is that former Adams State coach and Emeritus Professor Joe Vigil is well-versed...
