Galen Rupp Comes Up Short for USATF Title #9 - Then Blows Off The Media

The Rupp hate on LRC is at absurd levels right now. The truth is that he is probably the best American runner...who also happens to be totally unlikeable in person. When he wins, he's suspected of cheating and if he loses it's because he sucks. He's not going to win every race. The difference between him and Meb is that Meb was loved no matter how he performed. I don't think Galen is a bad guy. He just has zero personality or social graces.

Well if we're going to compare Galen to athletes from the big money sports, I think he comes out looking even better. Rupp has never been accused of rape or assault. He's never beaten his child or his wife. I can be pretty sure he's never murdered anyone.

So you can have your band of camera friendly thugs. I'll just be happy that the worst thing you can say about any of the athletes I support is "that guy's kind of socially awkward and doesn't handle media situations well."

There is a reason Meb was loved no matter how he performed.

Has Meb ever refused to talk to the media after a race? Has Meb ever been involved or questioned about PEDs?

This level of hate is Rupp's own doing. He lives and trains in the gray zone and that comes with a certain amount of scrutiny. If he does not like it he can switch coaches and come clean.

Agree that he doesn't owe fans anything, I'm not saying he does. Read the text you're responding to. I'm just saying its dissapointing and honestly not very good behaviour, doubt anyone disagree with that.

yeah because Meb wasnt an idiot. he accepted that his place in this world was a "runner", rupp comes off as he is doing this as a zombie and he would rather be playing WoW or dungeons and dragons. all you people making excuses for him are pathetic.

if you were a top international runner, would you or would you not try to make it your responsibility to be an ambassador to your sport? most runners try to do it, look at Geb, Meb, Bolt, Lagat, Sanya Richards, Symmonds tries hard, Pre, Webb, Ritz....

you claim rupp has zero personality or graces? well hell maybe he should take some classes on it, i know the NFL and NBA encourage they players to take classes on how to do interviews and how to interact with cameras and media.

But Rupp is like 31. We know all of this about him by now. He runs fast and is a wet blanket even when he gives interviews. That isn't going to change.

yeah and was on the sauce when those things happened, now he is on his natural ability and that means he cant break 4 and barely breaks 60 at the end of what is a slow 10k at the pro level

You do realize since the ProPublica thing came out Farah has continued to win gold, Rupp has an Olympic silver and a Boston marathon runnerup.

This morning a friend asked me if I really thought Rupp was going to win last night. i thought to myself, That was the dumbest idea ever. That he'd win a 10k 9 weeks after the Boston marathon. I mean most people take 3 weeks off after a marathon. So he builds up for three and then works out for 2 and tapers.

Now much of Rupp's career has defied my understanding of running so I did tell him, "Yes. I assumed he'd win but didn't think much about it. I just started never doubting him a few years back."

Now the rest of the post was amazingly good/funny.

I can't believe the negative posts on this board. The guy literally just got done running a 10k (still sweating) and obviously wasn't pleased with the results and he's supposed to stop dead in his tracks and give a press conference. I'm sure once he cooled down and gathered himself he would gladly talk with the media. He could actually do it the next day if he chose to. Love him or Hate him he's the GREATEST AMERICAN DISTANCE RUNNER EVER and has earned the right to be upset and disappointed and decide not to talk with the media when they want him to. I'm sure Galen will speak with the media in due time if he already hasn't yet.

I think it's a fairly known not so secret that many players use PEDs. LeBron's freakish build, strength, speed, rapid aging appearance and balding all look suspect to me. Maybe he's clean but I sure as hell would not bet money on it.

Everyone on the inside knows those stories about Meb, but he is still somehow a nice guy, right? We also know that Jenny B has over 40 TUE's, but thats fine, right?
