If he goes hard after the record when they are pretty far off pace he risks missing it and getting caught in the end. Loses money for the win, and risks that others begin to see him as vulnerable and his image takes a hit.

I think the issue is that Cain has been getting a lot of advice from SFH - she needs to quit that and her times will improve.
Let's imagine that there was an American distance runner right now with Mo's medal tally, talk me through how critical people who post here would be of him.

It's all relative, baby. Who knows when his gig is up? How long will a million dollars (which is probably $600,000 after taxes) or for that matter $3 million last when you live at a certain lifestyle. Of course he wants to build his nest egg as much as possible and not live in a house in Kenya for the rest of his life like many of WR Kenyans are now doing.
As for the folks you mentioned, well they just weren't tested out their in Ethiopia or Kenya are they? If you were one of the best natural runners in the world, and then pumped full of EPO you might just hammer away to. After all, you can run 7:25 3K and look like you just ran a comfortable 400 repeat right after you finish. But I still remember Geb sitting on Tergat and Komen and stinging them in the end.
You could certainly argue that Farah should have more balls or that's the kind of runner you like to watch. Fair enough. But Farah is a chess player. He's calculated and smart. He's not a running back, he's a clever quarter back.

There's no cleverness needed to sit on someone for an entire race. That takes no cleverness at all. It's weak and selfish. Take the lead. Do work.

What is the deal with Conseslus Kipruto, running a steeple time on a flat course. Steeplers are cursed, #1 one year and gone the next. Jager should have kept knocking on that sub-8 door last year, he may never get near it again.
Choge doesn't mind a slow pace being to Mo's advantage, because it keeps him from getting below 7:30 and into the GOAT discussion.
