So, back to Rupp. Seems very likely to continue to focus on track through 2016, has been remarkably injury free to this point in his career, already a solid contender at 10000m against the best in the world and may still have at least a little room to improve. 10% chance of medaling in Rio? easily. 25%? why not. Better than that? really too soon to know but who are you putting out there as better than 25% to medal in the men's 10000m in Rio?
bottom line: Rupp is a first-rate distance runner, the current financial incentives have pulled the best East Africans to the marathon, and if that continues to be the case for the next few years, he'll have every chance of winning another medal at the 2015 WC or the 2016 O Games.

Anyone think the poster behind this handle is former D1 runner who was probably in the same conference as Rupp during his entire 4 years and would get his a$$ handed to him every time they raced and bitter by that fact?

When those 2 place differences constitute the difference between a medal or no medal for Rupp, Manzano, or Centro they are "kind of" important. Along with the relative weakness of the African 10000 last year, you can also talk about Kiprop not being 100% last year (but then you have to also talk about the gold medalist last year being much stronger than many expected and not there this year).
A couple of places can mean a LOT.
Rupp hasn't quite been the same since he stayed up all night carrying Mo from his bed to the toilet before Pre.
Rupp's mean is 4th-5th in cc races and with a Gaussian distribution (for example). when you draw from the distribution you get a 2nd sometimes and a 7th.
These are statistical fluctuations and the fact that Rupp
statistically is 5th in the world is very impressive.
But clearly, most people here do not understand statistics
and fluctuations.

If he or other runners make it a fast race I think he could steal hardware in the 5,000, but I wouldn't count on Rupp to make his own destiny this way. Doesn't race much, never leads, will undoubtably settle behind the leaders, fast or slow.

Sometimes a runner does better than expected, sometimes worse, sometimes about where they would expect to be.
Rupp has clearly shown that he is among the top in the world, but in these tactical races it comes down to who has the best positioning and most zip on the last lap.
Farah seemed in complete control. Rupp hanging on for 4th was a good deal too.
The entire premise of this thread is moderately to completely absurd, but a good troll effort nonetheless.

The guy runs his socks off and has done so well progressing and tackling his old issue of "no speed/ turnover" not many runners - especially US runners- that make it on the world stage can make changes like he has. I think he ran his nuts off in that 10K yesterday and I think he ran and helped Mo just like the Africans do....and you go out there and bash him saying it is a career?
