I had a surgery (nissen fundoplication) about five years ago, and during the initial preparation stage, a nurse came over and hooked me up to a machine to get a baseline on all my vitals; not even really looking at me or speaking at first.

Then when she glanced at my RHR, displaying the number '41', and without missing a beat, said "So, how long have you been running for?"

We ended up having a little chat about running in general; she had a son who was a middle distance runner. I thought it was interesting that she didn't think that I could have been a cyclist, or some other endurance-related activity like soccer or whatever, that could also cause similar examples of athletic-related bradycardia.

Come on, this thread can't die. My contributions:

- you start thinking things like "Only 8 miles to go, I'm almost done" on your long runs

- Veins in strange places you have never seen them before

- Doing any kind of single feels like you're slacking off

- You inhale pancakes

I totally do this, but I don't think it has as much to do with insecurity (although I'm sure there's always some) than it does with the fact that as competitive runners who train to get faster and faster, we are all conditioned to feel being passed is simply unpleasant and is to be avoided.

So, when it happens on a training run, although it is meaningless (not a race), it just subconsciously kicks in to not let someone running behind me get past. I start speeding up it before I even really notice. I have no "I'll show him!", or "I don't wan't this person to think I'm slow!" - type thoughts in my mind at all. It just simply feels awkward to let someone run past me.

runners tend to be lazy when it comes to anything but running. Most my runner friends, especially male play video games or watch tv/internet all day. It's like a chore to get up and go to the bathroom

you bring your lunch to work everyday and it takes up about half the size of the community fridge, and weighs more than anyone's briefcase could dream of weighing
