Well I was never as fast as your 3:55 mile PR, only a 4:05. When I turned 45 I was still in great shape, and I thought it was an accomplishment to still run sub 5. There is no way I could get within 17-20 seconds of my PR at that age. I was more than twice that much off. I can't see how you did it. Congratulations. Excellent work.
In any case, really happy to see Cush post such a great mark at this age. Goes to show that nice guys don't always finish last ... although Cush came close, running dead last for the first lap-plus of the race before rebounding to finish 13th out of 18. Hey, fastest-ever American for age 45 is still, you know, age 45!

also, i can't believe this thread has been unearthed two years later. to answer a few questions: according to marcus dunbar, the oregon athlete was actually australian colin dalton.
best 400: 49.9 in practice--strangely it was the 3rd of 3 all out 400s with full recovery.
800: 1:49.38--slow compared to my mile/1500. i hated the 800.
3000: i think i ran it only once up in the bay area/san jose--coincidentally, the bruce jenner classic--8:09.31.
5000: i think i only ran this once as well--never in college, once at penn relays 1995--13:52.91. didn't run it again on the track until i was 41.
racing weight at peak fitness: about 138 lbs (now about 143-5).
i also like long walks on the beach, good craft beer, bad craft beer, crescent moons, and lucky charms, not necessarily in that order...
Cush - what's a typical week of training looking like for you these days? Congrats on the great run.

pretty much a weekly diet of one tempo run (usually only around 4 miles), one long run (10-14 with 8 miles of progression in the middle), and from november thru april, one track workout with around 5k of accumulated reps (typically at 5k race pace). i probably manage to accumulate 60-70 miles a week by running with my high school athletes (during cross country, and starting february, i join them for 2-3 morning runs), my daughter's youth team, tuesday nights with a local club, calcoast, and my sunday long run all by my lonesome. i also try to race at least once a month--it's hard for me to train without racing. weekly mileage is pretty haphazard--usually december/january i hit highs of 70-80, but i'm probably more typically at 60-70.
paces at my best--which hasn't been this year: usually 70 second pace on track reps--a little over on reps longer than 800, a little under on reps under 800. 8 miles progression on my 10 milers is around 5:45 pace; on 14 milers it's around 6:00 pace. my 4 mile tempos were consistently around 5:20 pace, but this year injuries and sickness got the best of me, so they were slower. hope this helps...
It gets geometrically more difficult to train well and recover the older you get, especially when you are in your early forties. Wait and see you young fellows.
Those two people (Cush and Lagat) are not even close to comparable. Cush has every reason to be happy with his results, but Lagat owns EVERY masters WR in his age group from 1500 to 5000. He owns two American OPEN records set as officially as masters athlete.

Not now, not ever. These kinds of arrogant claims are why a fair number of young people frankly despise masters athletics. I think a little respect for a guy who has won 7 championship medals for the USA might be in order.
