Also, if you check the Tiffin University published records on their Official Athletic website, every Men's and Women's distance record, with the exception of the 3000 Meter Steeplechase record, has been set while Ron Martin was coaching at Tiffin University (2005-2012). So clearly he has produced the fastest Distance runners in the history of Tiffin University.
I really dont care about Tiffin University or Ron Martin but I do feel that i need to point out one glaring hole in your comparison. To be fair there is no way you could have known this unless you were there.I was there. The 2004 Div 2 nats were in Evansville Indiana on a very difficult course. The course was absolutely saturated from the 2 weeks of rain leading up to the meet. It was probably the muddiest course I have ever seen. Every bag of 1/2 inch and 3/8 inch spikes in the entire town of Evansville were sold. And for anyone who has run there, at the bottom of the big hill(which was nothing but mud) there were no less than 50 shoes, minus their runners, stuck in the mud. Check the results from the 2004 championships and then check 2009 which was on the same course but with perfect conditions.
That's why I included the caveat that there are many outside factors that can't be judged when looking at Cross Country. But comparing 2004 and 2009 further proves my point. There is a ton more depth and the competition is much faster in the past 3 years than there was 10 years ago. If you look at the 2010 results (which were run in December on a course covered in snow) you'll still see 100 guys below the 33:00 mark which in 2004 earned All-American status.
So I am not trying to directly compare two Cross Country races, I think that that's impossible. But the Cross Country races can be used to see the general depth of the Division and to back up my claims about the Track times. And you can't deny that both the Tiffin University School records and what it takes to qualify and place at the Division II National Meet are both much faster than they were in 2005.
All this wont matter anyway once The Berg and Tiffin become one school so that each school won't have to close down and The Berg's head coach ( a great steepler from Toledo) becomes the head coach of the overall program and becomes a true legend of distance coaching for both schools .
Merging the two schools will never happen so please get your head out of the clouds.
Check the Facts, you are most certainly 100% correct, NCAA Division II track and field has absolutely sky rocketed over the last few years. In fact, go look at the USA Championships, Olympic Trials, and Olympics and you will see numerous division II athletes representing their countries.
With that being said, again, go to flashwest.com and look at NCAA D2 National Championships over the last few years and you will see that Tiffin is actually VERY WELL represented.
Since indoor 2009 they have had representation in the 100m,200m, 110h, 4x1, 4x4, pentathlon, heptathlon, decathlon, shot put, weight throw, pole vault, high jump and triple jump. Maybe I missed some more but regardless, that is damn good representation and evident that THE REST of their coaches have no problem keeping up with the ever growing division II landscape.
Go to their TFRRS page right now, they have 12 provisional marks between their men and their women, but no distance provo's.
I am not trying to discredit Ron Martin's character in any way shape or form, I am sure he is a great guy, but lets be honest, who cares what the Tiffin community thinks, looks like the dude wasnt pulling his weight and needed to go.
In terms of his named being drug through the mud, to me the only thing being drug through mud is Tiffin University. For their sake I hope their president, athletic director or head coach dont read this message board. Talk about some bad publicity.

Trying to figure out the wording for the Lipscomb job- is that a head cross country coach that reports to the overall director, or just an assistant cross country coach?
asst. spot, from what I've heard more admin work and moderate amount of coaching. the application process looks like they want a church of christ member no matter what, assist with recruiting, travel, campus activity.

Not exactly true. Operations, which is administrative work, true and important part of position. Assistant Coaching working primarily with the men's xc and distance programs, and eventually having a lot of control over that group. So significant coaching. Christian yes. Church of Christ is not a requirement at Lipscomb anymore though.

What is the start date for the Northwood job? I mean its almost outdoor season already, the position has been open for over a month. Any insight 'in the know'?
They are conducting interviews now and will bring in the best candidate as soon as they can whether that is for outdoor or this summer. That is what I have been told from the Elephant's mouth.

Hear Northwood has interviewed as many as 8 candidates. To my knowledge they have not started 2nd round of interviews yet? Meaning probably a good chance the new person doesnt start until outdoor is over. Just my guess.
What about Siena? saw the posting, looks like an attractive place for distance running(upstate NY), then i saw it was a part time position. I understand they dont have track but how can they not hire someone full time. With all the good distance kids in the state of NY they would be able to at least challenge for 2-4 in that conference.

I think it goes without saying that if a school doesn't sponsor track, they couldn't care less about how well the program performs athletically...thus, why hire someone full time? As offensive as that is to us, it is a fiscal decision that makes sense for small athletic departments who know they can realistically only pour money into one or two possible revenue generators. So they just need sport sponsorship minimums and the babysitters that go with them. There are a number of "DI" schools that do this...apply at your own risk. Where is it posted?
Does anyone know the timeline for Lipscomb? Just how religious do you have to be to coach there? Any other insight in to the program?
