I suppose it's a mark of my age, but I think we need to note Jim McKay's great work covering the Olys for decades. I go back to 1972: his call of Frank Shorter's unexpected win, and his call of Dave Wottle's gold medal performance in the 800: "He's got the first Kenyan ! He's got the second Kenyan !"
And I am going a bit off topic if I recognize Dwight Stones in the Field events for more than two decades. Stones had the privledge of broadcasting the 1991 World Championship long jump battle between Carl Lewis and Mike Powell which, for my money, was the greatest competition in the history of all sport. Stones fully appreciated the moment and the two magnificent performances.
While I have the podium, let me give all of you a Stones preview in the upcoming Olys: at some point he will say the following while showing a replay of a high jump:
"Great hip height on that jump."
the problem I have with Stone's commentary is that I always hear him talking about some field event after they cut away from the 5k with 3 laps to go

Great run by Jonsey and an amazing call.

Somewhere this has to exist without all that crap on it.
There was a great radio call, maybe BBC, of the world champs 5000m between Kipchoge and El Guerrouj in 2003. Heard it live online, never forgot it.
For what must have been the last 50m of the race, the announcer just screamed "El Guerrouj! Kipchoge! El Guerrouj! Kipchoge!" again and again until the race was over. Maybe it reads like it was annoying, but it was very exciting to hear live especially not being able to see the race. Looked everywhere for a clip of it but all I can find is the video.
The commentary of Ray Hudson always trips me up. This dude has the craziest sayings and the accent only adds to it.
"1:56 at 800...that's fast..." - Steve Cram commentating Komen's legendary 3k record.

Or something like that.
The tried to nail a guy from behind.

The call in Cologne, Germany in 1989 of Said Aouita's sub 7:30 3,000 meter run.
"Look at the magic little Morrocan".
He was the first man under 7:30 at that distance, and it was a World Record.
I remember that it was a great call- "That magical little Morrocan." I also remember some girl writing a letter to T&F News saying what a bad announcer her was! Crazy and she had to put her name and hometown.
That guy was great. It was, Spine tingling, mind numbing excitement (or something like that).
I remember that letter!! I thought what a biatch. She sounds like some snob. Lololol
I loved that call!
It was after Bannister had broken the 4 minute mile for the first time, and the stadium announcer spoke the following nice, calm, and slow...
"Ladies and gentlemen, here is the result of event nine, the one mile: first, number forty one, R. G. Bannister, Amateur Athletic Association and formerly of Exeter and Merton Colleges, Oxford, with a time which is a new meeting and track record, and which—subject to ratification—will be a new English Native, British National, All-Comers, European, British Empire and World Record. The time was three..."

In fainess to Charlie, it was Frank Shorter who mase the initial gaffe and Charlie followed his lead.

Trying to compile a list of the best calls by a TV commentator during a distance track event.
So far I've got ..
1. "Look at Mills! Look at Mills!" - Dick Bank NBC, '64 Olympic 10k (for which he was fired!)
2. "And there's one man's blazing speed that has torn this field asunder" - Ron Pickering BBC, '77 World Cup 1500
3. Not sure what they are saying, but the Finnish broadcast announcer(s) at the '71 European Championships 10k last lap duel between Juha Väätäinen and Jürgen Haase sound very excited indeed.
4. "Those blue eyes, like chips of ice" - David Coleman BBC, '80 Moscow Olympics 800 final
5. "The Europeans say that he hasn’t really been in a war yet, but this boy’s got utter belief in himself – and he’s inexperienced enough in many ways not to know how good the others are." - David Coleman BBC, '72 Munich Olympic 5k final
Even though it didn't age well, the "A star is born!" when Marion Jones won her first title was pretty great at the time.

A few more from Ron Pickering:
She's dragged the javelin back into the 20th century.
He's going up and down like a metronome.
Harvey Glance, the black American with the white top and black bottom.
And Brian Hooper will have that recurring dream again and again.
Henry Rono, the man with those tremendous asbestos lungs.
Anything from RP/DC is just pure gold. Will always be the voices of track and field.
I absolutely love this ITV call of Kipketers 800m WR in Zurich with Alan Parry and Steve Ovett- some absolute gems in here.
Through the bell: "Oh my word that's fast alright.... forty-eight point one-o at four hundred meterrrrs"
At the finish: "one-forty-one seventy three is the mark.... listen to the crowd....look at Kipketer.... UNBELIEVABLE"
A truly great piece of work from both of them but especially Parry as the main play-by-play here.
