The reason it doesn't make sense to you is that you're looking at sex from a different point of view. For humans, sex is without a doubt more than a physical act. There is an emotional component to it. I would argue that trying to reduce it to simply a pleasurable act is more abnormal than abstaining from sex. Sex is the closest physical way two humans can be in contact. When Lolo says it is a "gift" to her husband, what she probably means is that one way to look at sex as as a complete gift of yourself to your partner. For her it is a personal choice. What is wrong with saying, "I don't want to be physically as close as possible to any other human being than the one I've pledged to give the rest of my life to?"
Maybe I'm old fashioned, but too many people look at sex (and dating/marriage in general) as getting something from someone else instead of giving something to someone else. If more people looked at their relationships as a union instead of something self-serving, I think we'd have a lot healthier society.
Religion. She never mentioned it. Is it possible it was a personal decision because sex can be very intimate?

Male monkeys will do work to be able to see pictures of a female monkey from behind. Animals of all kinds simulate sex and mount each other. I think there is plenty of evidence that they find these activities rewarding.

BTW most lesbians would be totally open about sex before marriage. This is how I know LoLo is not a lesbian. +1 And it can be rather awkward when you do find that one person you want to be with and having to explain to them that they are just one of many. That is sure to tell them that they will be the last and that they can trust you! (that was sarcasm) Life can be very lonely when you've spread yourself so thin that sex has become an act of personal satisfaction and you can no longer be trusted when the honeymoon period is over. Then who suffers? The children.

Here is the thing, though... She is in for a huge letdown because sex is awesome, but it takes some practice, you know? Also, the body is at its sexual peak in the late teens, early twenties. I am not saying older folks cannot have good sex, but damn girl... use that body, right?

It's not awkward at all. I assume anyone I date has been with other people, but as long as they're out of the picture it doesn't matter. Much rather deal with that than be someone's first boyfriend in their 20s (???!?).
