Most annoying hobby-jogger accessory

To everyone who is posting complaints about "hobby joggers" in this thread, there are only two differences between them and you.

1. They obviously don't give a flying f*ck what any of you think and they will continue to drink water while exercising and wear the gear that they love whether or not you are losing sleep over it at night. They sure as hell don't.

2. They run for SANE reasons: health, fun, fitness, goals, etc. They don't run 100+ miles a week to put themselves into an imaginary superhero class.

Some of you sound so miserable and cynical that you would probably benefit from meeting for a group run with your local running club. They could teach you about how to enjoy life more.

Today I was getting changed at my local gym after a 60 minute run outside. A lady came in from her 2 mile run on the treadmill wearing a pink Nike running skirt, matching tank top, pink i-Pod, and silver Nike Shox. She had a water bottle attached to her running skirt. When she started talking to me about how her run went my world did not suddenly come crashing to an end. I asked her how long she had been a "runner" for. She told me she had been running for 2 years and 1 month to this day - she knew that because it was the day she was diagnosed with breast cancer. I realized her pink skirt was a breast cancer awareness skirt. I also realized she had incredibly short hair (looked like it had been all shaved at one point). I'd love to hear how everyone else would have treated her. I forgot to mention, she had a 26.2 tattoo on one of her calves. What a freak, right?

Please don't do that. I know a guy that is in a wheelchair for life because he was running with a walkman on (yes this was back in the late 80s). He was on the sidewalk too....got hit by a drunk driver he never heard coming because of the music. He would openly tell you he is paralyzed because of the walkman.

Most of you are probably too young to remember the "pacing" watches that came out around 1984. You would set your stride length and the pace you wanted to run. The watch had an audible beep that you were supposed to match your turnover to. In other words, your foot should strike the ground each beep.

I knew a guy who wore one during a marathon. The people running near him were ready to kill him by the end of the race.

I am not old enough to remember those, but I have seen people that use them. Needless to say it drove me nuts.

So because she had cancer, I need to agree with her views on everything? Or just her approach to running?

In case you're as slow as your post indicates, I'll spell it out for you. I can make fun of hobby joggers. The fact that you met one that once had cancer does not change anything it's just a lame, emotive attempt on your part to distract from legit criticisms to hobby joggers, who really water down the sport.

I just love this. Hobby joggers criticize other hobby joggers because they think they are faster hobby jogger.

Can any of you "hard core " studs claim any Olympic appearance's?

Any of you locking horns with the top 5 in any of the marathon majors?

I feel like I am your 8th grade English teacher explaining the point of a fable. No, it doesn't mean you have to agree with her views because she had cancer. The point is these criticisms are far from "legit". They are mundane at best and to be quiet frank, embarrassing. Each one I have heard sounds like my 17 year old sister who preaches about how she is different from the "uncool" kids at her HS. I listen to her and I cringe. She told me the other day how her and her friends basically humiliated some other girl about her soccer gear. They did this because the girl absolutely loved to play soccer but was a terrible soccer player. Her mother had bought her a Manchester United jersey for Christmas which she decided to wear to practice. My sister is 17 (and an idiot). The majority of us are adults, which just makes it more pathetic.

And also to reply to your same post, I consider myself a hobby jogger. Despite having earned All-American twice, I will never again run competitively due to a debilitating genetic problem. I am still able to run a few times a week which I am incredibly grateful for. Those few days a week will never allow me to run well again, but I still enjoy them. Perhaps I should apologize for "watering down" your sport.

The worst I can remember was the Casio beeper watch. It beeped constantly. It was to help a runner set his or her pace.

God, it was annoying. Thankfully retired some yeas back.

Let's be clear. There are no pros on this board hating on "hobby joggers". There are only those who aren't quite good enough to make it in the big leagues. Professional athletes would only encourage those who participate in their sport.

The funny thing is that stride rate doesn't really change regardless of speed (at least according to Daniels, et al.) The thing that changes with speed is stride length.

Thanks for this, neliah2507, for that post. I don't feel like I need to go off anymore. Agent.Orange13 is either a 13 year old girl with no friends, incredibly insecure, a troll, or a just a f#cking idiot. Less constructive than your post but no less than anything Agent.Orange13 has posted.
