What happened to super-slow long runs?

Last winter i ran 3 months of distance training from January to the end of March. During this time i averaged about 40-45 miles per week.at no time did i ever run faster than 10:00 per mile (usually about 10:30 on a garmin).I ran a spring 10K in 43:38, a 7:03 pace! during the race my legs felt easy but the last mile my breath was totally maxed out!

I am truly a believer in LSD type training, its gentle and easier on joints and ligaments.As a footnote i also injured my Achilles tendon during this race,something i attribute to not doing any race pace work at all in my buildup.

I've started doing something like this as well--9:30-10:20 EZ pace, consistent 38-42 mpw, not much speed (if it is, it's just a few miles at goal MP (7:35-7:40) or fast-finish progressions--ie starting at 9:30 and going down to 7:40). No actual track workouts other than an initial Michigan in February to test baseline fitness. I'm going to jump into a 5k or 10k this summer and see how that translates off of pure base mileage.

The 80's was when Runners World started pushing less mileage and slower long runs. American distance runner went down the toilet.
